With all the "high tech" polymer, diamond hard, spray on, parkerized, blah, blah, blah, finishes, Ted continues to build guns like they were supposed to be built. Like someone is going to take care of them. Builders can't build a gun that removes responsibility from the owner to provide proper maintanance and care, like any owner of a fine machine would.

Bulletproof, Hardcore, Duty Grade, Tuff Stuff, is fine. However, despite the name of the parts or how you say it a finely built 1911 has touches that only builder can conceive of. The names don't make it more reliable or durable, the builder does. Some who contact us make the mistake that a beautifully blued Colt with stunning wood stocks or ivory isn't durable and suitable for anything. Rather they think that only a bead blasted, black gun with laser beams will hold up under continuous use.

It takes alot more to build guns like you see here on LTW from the men on the front page. No parts changing, just painstaking time fitting the parts....all the parts that make the whole. I have a blued Colt revolver from the 40's my grandfather took wonderful care of, and it is as reliable to day as it was 66 years ago. When you are going to afford youself the finest of anything it deserves to be taken care of like it is the finest of what is available.

A gun like this that is on it's way to Florida is one of those guns. Forgive my lecture, it just needs to be said sometimes.

Makes you wonder if Wyatt Earp or Doc Holiday were sitting at this table they might have traded in their Colt SAA's for something a little like this.

Some of the finer items you might find on a "well heeled" pistolero. Bulman leather, a Randall knife, ok maybe a modern magazine but I bet this gun would run it.

I am so sorry I dont get here more often....

I certainly couldnt put into words how beautiful that pistol is....once again fantastic...
Now let me see...smells like 20year old single malt if Im not mistaken...the lack of something of that quality certainly does highten ones senses....then again it's been a while since Ive had the pleasure...

Is that a signature grade, a gun you specified, or a modified 1* package?

Any special details on the build?

This is not a 1* pistol or a modified 1*. It is a customer spec'd gun built specifically by Ted. Certainly there are some details I could not capture in seven photos. But the owner of this gun is going to be very happy. The frame to slide on this one is outstanding. The trigger is just the way they should be.

That is a spectacular piece of craftsmanship!!! As I look around at some of the newer generation of smiths I can't help but think that the old ways of doing work by hand like all of the great smiths here on LTW are becoming a thing of the past. The skill, knowledge, sweat, and tears are evident in the fine artistry and workmanship displayed in these fine custom firearms and each smith's custom has it own unique character and flair. If I could only win the lottery and buy many more examples of each.

Nothing makes me happier than to take out one of these customs and shoot a few hundred rounds through it and then find some other feature that the smith did that I previously hadn't noticed... it is just truly amazes me the attention to detail that the customs smiths put into their work. I am one happy guy. That is truly an amazing example of a custom 1911 Ted!!

This post reminds me of what I hate about this place. It makes me want to spend lots and lots of money. The work from Ted's bench just keeps getting better.

I have been into shooting for over 20 years, but earlier this year I handled & shot my first "nice" 45, it was a Yost custom my shooting buddy had recently purchased...I was really impressed with the workmanship and feel of that gun. This gun has that same look, outstanding!

Yep that Yost Custom pistola shot pretty good that day, and has continued to do so as recently as on the morning of July 4th. :)

I am the very fortunate owner of this fantastic pistol. This is not my first, and I fervently hope not my last, custom pistol from Ted Yost.

Ted's extreme attention to detail, along with his fantastic work on the big things, make his custom pistols really something special.

On top of all that he is a real gentleman and a pleasure to deal with.

I just cannot express how happy I am to have this wonderful example of true craftsmanship.

In case anyone is wondering, I do highly recommend Ted Yost for any custom work that you may want done on your firearms.

Also, the grips were purchsed from Esmeralda.

I feel bad sometimes that I can't offer more than just a few words about the great pistols and stunning photographs. I will add that having met Ted it is easy to see that this work comes from that man. I can't really put it into words but those that know or have met Ted know of what I speak. Perhaps the best way to say it is that this gun exudes elegance.

This is a beautiful gun. Words fail.

One question, though...it's not posted as a Signature Grade, and doesn't have the inlayed Y logo. I can't for the life of me see what the differences might be between this gun and one of the Signature Grades.

Can Mr. Yost shed some light on what exactly the differences might be? Just curious.

The only thing that keeps this one out of the Signature Grade category is that I did not make the grips for it. They're Esmereldas supplied by the customer, and to be honest I don't have any cocobolo that comes close to the structure of those slabs  They were beautiful.

As to the question of what comprises a signature grade build... well, I have a few ideas on the subject. I've been using the term since 1994 when Wayne Novak urged me to create something that was uniquely my own - something that would identify with me, even though I was working for someone else. I don't take advice from someone of Wayne's stature in the community lightly. I thought enough of his support that I gave him the second Signature Grade I ever made. The first was mine, the third was my son's (now owned by our own "Schlamoo"). The rest have gone to movie stars, foreign royalty, hard workin' guys, and maybe even a collector or two.

What goes into a Signature Grade has remained the same since the first. My absolute best. The fitting and processing of each individual part, the selection of each component, the testing, refining, the finishing, even the grips - all receive my personal attention. This is a gun that's built by hand - hand checkered, hand fit, and hand polished. From start to finish, only one person will touch the gun. Me. It's not something you can farm out, because it's your name on it. A "signature" piece that includes the work of others also raises the question..."If you're not capable of these things, what else are you not capable of?"

It's certainly not easy, hell - it's probably not even efficient. But it's the way I think something like this should be done. To do less would be cheating.

Bryon,

I talked to Ted at length about this pistol, and specified that I did not want the inlaid "Y" on the slide.

Ted was very gracious and agreed to omit them on this gun, even though it was his work and his work alone that produced this pistol.

I absolutely wanted the "Yost Custom" on the dust cover, because I feel that Ted should always be recognized as the person who built this gun.

Deleting the "Y" was just a personal choice because I feel that sometimes a little less is better, and I and anyone else who really knows very high quality 1911's will recognize this gun for what it is and who built it.

Fortunately Ted builds superb custom pistols and really cares about the quality of his work and his customer's satisfaction - not advertising.

So, now I am going to get my Ted Yost gun out of the safe and spend some quality time admiring it!

I only hope that I will be able to have another beautiful 1911 built by Ted Yost in the future.
