I need to get a new 1911 for a gift by 10-25. I need to stay under $2,000. I'm thinking Wilson, but I am open for suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Don't know what this is a gift for..or what the gun would be used for but I haven't heard any complaints about Nighthawk.

Patrick,

Be prepared for lots of divergent opinions on this subject.

I don't own a Nighthawk, but I've not seen any new ones for much less than $2100.

In addition to a Yost Signature Grade Colt, I also own three Les Baer pistols, a 5" steel Custom Carry, a 5" SRP and a Concept X. All three are very accurate and absolutely stone cold reliable.

There are lots of good pistols from limited production manufacturers that can be had today, but I happen to think that Les Baer represents the best value in that category.

It's not uncommon to find people who don't like the fact that Les generally fits his pistols tightly. In fact a friend of mine of considerable experience in the area of defensive pistols and training says that Les "doesn't finish his pistols, that's why they're tight." I don't know whether I agree with that, but the fact is that if you object to shooting 500 or so break-in rounds to loosen things up slightly, or you want a pistol that you can easily remove the barrel bushing by hand from when new, then a Les Baer may not be a good choice for you.

If, on the other hand, you want a pistol that's loaded with good features, very accurate (even in the "standard" configuration), rock solid reliable and bank vault snug (but greased glass smooth when broken in), then you could do a lot worse than a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special, or other LBC model. I think they're the best value in the limited production market space.

Just my opinion, based on my priorities and preferences. YMMV, of course, as it has for others.

I'd have to agree that the Baer pistols represent a very solid deal for the money. And, yes, even though I own a Taurus PT1911 I do have some high dollar pistols too! :D

If you're looking for somebody to shoot you straight on what's available and what, and what not, to look for, PM PT-Partners here on the board and see what he tells you. He might have exactly what you're looking for in stock.

I have a Smith Wesson Performance 1911. Very tight, accurate, and great customer service. However, some people hate the external extractor. I would buy it again.

I believe one of the semi customs from Wilso, Les Baer, Ed Brown or Nighthawk would fill the bill. Their are several dealers that might have one in stock. I vote for the Les Baer TRS...
