Gun is finished in Bear Coat Satin Black.
Customer specified the Schuemann AET barrel.
The mag well is the old style Brown's Maxi-well. The bottom 1/4" of the frame is machined off and replaced with the well. This preserves the original size of the gun and eliminates the need for magazine pads. These are indeed legal for IDPA.
Grip safety was welded, refitted and custom contoured.
The high cut was recontoured and the factory 30lpi checkering redone.
The original front sight cut was welded and remachined.
'Ball' cuts at front of slide.
Heinie rear sight has a custom installed Trijicon lamp with white outline.
Trigger and disconnector replaced and new trigger job completed. 4lbs.
Not much of the original gun was left unaltered. In fact, the slide to frame fit was the only thing not reworked or replaced.
The gun in its original state was quite nice for a semi-production piece. The customer wanted a true custom though.

OOPS!
Just checked my notes and I DID tighten the slide to frame fit.

Elegant, Chuck.

Obviously not Baer checkering....did you re-cut or start fresh? I like the right side ambi stop, and I think you've got a really nice Heinie there, pal

Beautiful gun!

YAWN...............Just the typical perfect attention to detail, the dead on machine work, and execution of a Rogers 1911. Great looking gun Chuck.

Yowza!

But you tightened the slide to frame fit? I've had 4-5 Baers come through here and every one of them spec'd, and truly required, loosening.... not slide to frame so much, but the barrels were fit so that they had to bend for the gun to lock up. Not the kind of thing that even thousands of rounds would cure because they were bending maybe 3-4 thou, so either the barrel foot or barrel/bushing fit was gonna have to wear that much before the gun would go into battery without this flexing of the barrel. Other than this difference of opinion on how to fit barrels and how tight to make things overall, I've found the Bears to be really excellent guns!

That's the only way to go on an ambi, I've done a few that way and I got it from you. I build up the top of the right hand lever too so that it bangs off on the underside of the slide. Betcha anything that is how they were originally intended to be-- although I don't really remember if some of the original Swensons from years ago were that way or not. They should be. Somebody needs to make one that hits the slide underside going up, and maybe the grip screw bushing going down? Those stops increase the robustness of an ambi 5-fold far's I'm concerned (but to my surprise I hear few to no complaints about them coming loose or breaking without the stops).

Wow guys!!
Thanks for all the nice comments. It really means a lot to all of us smith's to know our work is appreciated.
This gun really ate the time up. Striving for that last little bit of cosmetic perfection takes more time than we'd like to admit!
Someone asked about the slide stop. Yes, it is a Wilson extended, that has been shortened and recontoured.
I was about to ship this gun some time ago, when a set of Larry Davidson grips arrived. Yikes!!! :) Immediately ordered several more pair and discussed a set for this gun with its owner.
He liked them as much as me, so I was on the phone yet again with Larry ordering another set!
These are the grey/black Texas Horned Lizard pattern.
Larry, and his grips and incredible knives can be found at:

Chuck... all I can say is WOW. What amazing attention to detail and flawless execution. Wonderful. And the Bear Coat finish is gorgeous as well.... is that a finish you send out for or do yourself? I presume it's a spray and bake.... is it your first choice among the spray and bakes?

On another topic... you did trigger jobs for me a couple of years ago on my two Browning Hi-Power Forties... thank you so much... they now have triggers which are nearly as nice as can be had on a 1911... I think that's a truly remarkable accomplishment with Hi-Powers! Great job.

Do you do action jobs on Ruger SP101's?

DHart,
Bear Coat is provided by Rocky Mountain Arms of Longmont, Colorado.
It is my favorite of the 'spray and bakes'. They do not sell it for use by others.
As to the BHP trigger jobs, thanks!, but it was not me.
My work is limited to 1911s and AR15s. I will however install sights on BHPs.

Chuck... uh-oh.... now I'm really embarassed. It was late last night when I wrote the post and I was thinking just a little less than quite clearly! I'm sorry. It was Don Williams who did the trigger work on my BHP's. (Open mouth, insert foot! - Boy do I feel dumb!)

Thanks for the info on the Bear Coat. And my admiration on the pristine work you do!
