I have not used Rogaurd, but the NP3 holds up real well. I had my daily carry gun done in NP3 and I liked it a little more than hard chrome. Sorry I have no usefull advice on Rogaurd.

I assume you went with silver? how were the sights finished then? I already have night sights installed so I'm curious how they would finish them! Thanks for your reply- chad

I had Novaks on that gun, they pulled the sights and finished the gun in NP3, then put the sights back on and sighted it in. The sights were left untouched, I liked the contrast. It made it fast to pick up the front sight. I have never seen anyone make their sights silver when having the gun done in hard chrome or NP3.

I have a Kimber and the sights are a bit scuffed up in spots, I guess I should ask them if they can be re-finished black! Thanks for all of your help, Im leaning towards a complete NP3 finish, then the Roguard wear wont be an issue. Take care- chad

I've got a Series 70 Commander and a Les Baer Comanche up at Robar now getting refinished. The Colt has an aluminum frame so I've asked them to NP-3 all the steel parts and leave the frame with its black anodizing. The Baer will come home with Rogaurd on the outside and NP-3 internals.

Robar quoted me a six week turnaround so I should have the guns back in about two weeks. I'll post some pictures here as soon as I get the guns back.

I have had good luck with NP3. Rogard seemed to wear like gun kote and other similar finishes.

NP3 is not as tough as chrome, and if you scratch it or wear it you get shiny spots. But you can go over aluminum with it, with less trouble.

Both are great finishes, but be warned, if your hands are sweaty or slick you may have problems working your slide or other operations, I have.

On a duty gun, I would just spray it with Boeshield after cleaning.

I have to say that I agree that the finish is great but the customer service is not so great. I have to send my cz-75 back 5twice to get it right. They kept screwing up my request. I ewanted the internals NP3d and the externials rogarded. they kept doing the opposite!! But they were nice about it and paid for shipping so it could have been worse.

This is all my opinion and experience, but I would never do business with Robar. I have seen them ruin more guns than improve them. I had Roguard on a USP, and it started to chip and flake off in short order. Not very durable at all. My best shooting buddy NP3'd his Sig 220, and it never worked right after he had it done. And he had to wait nearly forever to get his gun back. We both swore we'd never do business with them again, as has several of our other friends....and we are local in Arizona to them!

Really, your best options are hard chrome, Melonite, or one of those new DLC or whatever finishes. Spray and bake is pretty much all the same.

Robar has a habit of losing small parts and pins according to a gunsmith I know. I love NP3. Its just too bad they are the only game in town!

It is ideal for aluminum frames, IMO.

A friend of mine had his custom Para NP3ed and was disappointed that it seemed to wear off quickly.

I may just ship it out to Virgil Tripp and have it hard chromed, he did a nice job on a Glock slide for me a while back!

I believe Coal Creek Armory does Melonite now and no one does HC better than Virgil Tripp.

I have Roguard on my Robar SR-90. It has been dragged through the dirt, spraypainted over and still looks like new 9 years later. Definite thubms up.

About 10 years ago, if memory serves corrrectly, I had a custom Mauser action, barrel, and parts coated with NP 3. It has withstood that many years of hunting. I have been very pleased with its performance and durability. While it comes with some lubricity properties, I still use proper lubrication on all friction parts and recommend you do as well. Hope this helps.

I had a heavily carried gun done in Np3 and rogaurd two tone. Looked great after much abuse. I have had a number of guns NP3'd they were not as slick as often claimed great finish with good service from Robar.
Virgil Tripp does a fantastic job too had a number of guns done by virgil.
Best customer service in the business.
