I will try to make this as brief as possible, as I know my target audience (the gunsmiths here) are a busy lot.

I found the joys of building custom 1911's earlier this year, and find it to be a most agreeable past time for me. While living in TN I befriended a local police officer who is a pretty damn good gunsmith, and he taught me a lot in the brief time I spent with him. Unfortunately, my career took me to Boise ID, so no more lessons from my good friend Rick the cop.

Since moving here, I have looked around for a good gunsmith/pistolsmith in the area, and there are apparantly none. How then do I continue my education? I am certainly not experienced enough to just continue tinkering on my own with no supervision, nor do I place much stock in watching gunsmithing videos and trying to emulate what I see there.

Anyone know of a good smith in or around the boise area that would be interested in an apprentice?

Thank you allowing me to take up your precious time with this, any advice is sincerely appreciated.

You also might want to try Cylinder and Slide in Freemont, NE....Bill Laughridge is offering some classes in gunsmithing, and he sometimes takes this class on the road! Good Luck--John

Cylinder and slide is a good one if your like me and want to do a bunch all at once. I went last august. Great guy great course. Most everything is hand fitting. Box o parts to gun. It is an intense course but you get a gun out of the deal. His barrel fitting class is almost a must. It was a good course for building a straight up .45 with the usual mods. I had a blast and it gives you a great base to start from. I had a bit of experience prior to going and learned some great stuff.

I'd stop by and see Tom & the boys at Milt Sparks Holsters. They are sure to know the locals.
