"The ultimate setup is probably a 9x23/9mm para switch barrel gun. Shoot .38 Super, 9x23, and 9x19 all with the same gun. Priceless!"

:D
I got one almost done!

9mm, 9x23 & 38Super all in one....

Hmmm... I got one that shoots the 9mm and 9x23... I'll have to see if the 9x23 barrel feeds 38super next time I'm at the range. :D

Here's a pic:

Eric, I see some strange and interesting things in that pic. What is COT 0341, for starters?

Eric,

That's one of those Commanders that Nowlin made for Ground Zero's CDT isn't it? Cool gun.

CDT 0341

It's the brand new Nowlin CDT Commander 9x23mm made exclusively for CDT 0341 and Ground Zero International.

Ned... it is as was already answered... :)

A neat little Commander that I've been carrying. I did a little home gunsmithing to remove the lanyard ring and smooth out the magwell some as it wasn't working as well as I'd like as my concealed carry peace. NO WHERE NEAR as nice as any of the 'smiths here could do... but it suits me for now. I'll see if I can get a couple pics up of mine.

Anthony forgot to mention 9x21mm also in his list. When the 9x23mm was new in 1996, a whole team of shooters from Winchester ammo showed up at the American Handgunner Shootoffs in Colorado shooting factory 9x23 in their .38 Super guns. I don't remember specifically but I imagine they were using comped race guns.

I had an S&W Model 686 rechambered for .38 Super a couple years ago. The cylinder is milled to accept moonclips and works great (best with .357" bullets). It will NOT chamber 9x23mm brass though because the tapered brass is wider than Super brass at the base.

I just delivered a commander built on a Caspian frame and slide with a Barsto ramped barrel. There were some tricks needed to get it to feed flawlessly all of the time. We ended up using the Metalform 38 Super mags and they worked great. It is an awesome carry round in that size of package. The shot to shot follow up is tremendous and the accuracy beyond 50 yards is also awesome. Not that you would ever take that shot, but if you needed to, you could do it.

I have been shooting the Corbon Pow'rball ammo and find it to be very acceptable for accuracy, speed and feeding. And this gun shot .38 Super just fine.

I have a personal gun in the works that will be a 9X23/38 Super and 9X19 with another barrel using a Caspian Titanium frame and stainless slide. It won't be the only one, there is another matching pair that will be done in 9X23 and 10MM. With a few tricks done to the Barsto barrel and other stuff, I have been able to get these guns to literally feed empty rounds. And yes, I did learn what works well along the way and what does not. I build all of the 9X23 guns I do with ramped/supported barrels with the Para/Clark ramp. I have pics of this gun on the forum and will not bore you with more of them, but it is pretty much full house commander with Heinie sights.

Jess- What reamer are you using? Can you shoot 38 Super? Do you know who is grinding the most compatible for both calibers?

Anybody care to comment on the current 9X23 reamers from Clymer or Dave Manson? Which one will interchange with the 38 Super? Is Nowlin selling a reamer? Thanks!

There are some different reamers out there and properly so for a non-SAAMI cartridge.

My own take as a user not a smith and certainly not an expert is that there are properly different reamers to modify an existing chamber and to start from a barrel blank.

Further there are throating issues - in my limited knowledge and experience I see a slightly long throat in the 9X23 - after the manner of Weatherby freebore - as appropriate and a good thing. To that extent chambering or rechambering may involve more than making sure a loaded cartridge fits and headspaces and beyond that feeds and extracts.

I have RCBS dies marked Nowlin and I'm pretty certain in my belief that there are different reamers floating around. As to anyone's current practices I'd say ask them.

My own use is as a carry gun - and I don't much hold with interchangeable chambers - see e.g. an old Gun Digest article on What interchangeable from the days the 9mm/38 marked Largo barrels out of Spain were being sold as anything fits - so I can't say that anything will interchange with the .38 Super but the the .38 Auto. I know you can fire a .45 ACP in a .30-'06 with a Mauser style extractor to hold the case against the bolt face but I don't do it - same with a 9X19 in a long chamber. In sum starting with a SAAMI chamber for .38 Auto and changing it to shoot 9X23 means the chamber is no longer a SAAMI chamber for .38 Auto so I'm not inclined to do it.

What goes on between a shooter and his gunsmith is of course a matter for consenting adults.
