Stage 11, which should have been pretty straight forward, was a killer. I shot it first thing Saturday morning. The sun was just over the berm so the sun was in my eyes and the targets were in shadow. After the first couple shots, I had so much smoke in the air I gave up and pretty much just sprayed rounds downrange. I only had three hits on each of the far targets.

Otherwise, no problems with equipment, ammo, or pistol, which is much better than last year.

Anyway, it was a good match with a nice mix of standards and run-n-gun.

Great pics! I'm just back..... I suppose it goes without saying, Rob Leatham won.....by a mere 4%....he had some guys breathing down his neck this year:

1 Leatham, Robbie L
2 Sevigny, Dave
3 Voigt, Michael
4 Puente, Ted
5 Seeklander, Michae
6 Koenig, Doug
7 Hobdell, Angus
8 Butler, Taran
9 Strader, Phil
10 Smith, Shanon

Gunner, I don't want to hijack your thread but I though it would be too snooty to start my own...... especially when you plumb beat me to it!

Due to a schedule conflict I did not shoot Friday with the two squads I had set up. So I shot with a bunch of people I had never met, which actually is one of my favorite things! Made some new friends and learned a few things.

One squadmate and new friend was Bob Novak (no relation to the other Novak), who is making a huge, huge magwell for single stacks. I'll get his website up when I get reorganized here.

And I finally met Sharyn Cohen in person. She moderates this forum (competition). We sorta "met" a couple years ago when I worked on a pistol for her and I've been hearing little bits and pieces about her moving up in USPSA open class.... so I didn't expect to see her at the SSC but what a pleasant surprise it was.

I learned some sign language, too, when Stan Chen plopped down his credit card at dinner Friday night to buy for the whole table including some people he'd never met before. When he rests his chin on his thumbs and lays both index fingers along side his nose, then taps his nose with them when you say, "Stan, you are NOT buying dinner for the whole table", it means, "Oh, yes I am, now shut up and get back in the conversation".

I thought it was a great match. Some guys said it was less complex than some in the past-- I guess so. Actually, it must have been as I managed to get through it without running by any targets without engaging them..... that means it had to be simple :?

No problem Ned, hijack away......besides it had to do with the match happenings.

I was lucky with my squad, good people who helped at each stage with taping and resetting. Fun match, RO staff was great and helpful, interesting courses of fire, I really liked stages 9 and 10. Wished I had shot better, maybe next year.

Bob and I run in the same circles here in the NE. I have had the pleasure of being squadded with him at last years Long Island Championships and at OBCATS once or twice. He and his business partner Joe are two really nice guys who make a fantastic shirt for shooting in warm weather.

Here's the most impressive thing-- he never picked up a gun until 4 years ago, at age 45. In that short time, at that age, he's learned to shoot like a house afire-- I figured he was A or Master.

Tell ya something else I liked about the match. At the awards, the Springfield PR guy, Bill Dermody, got political a bit and talked about some really evil legislation pending in IL. It bans the sale, possession, and manufacture of "assault weapons", whatever the hell they are. Now, IL is a lovely state that is in most areas, a sportsman's paradise, and a huge segment of the population has your good old, common sense American values, and sees the dangerous fallacy of this kind of illogic. BUT, Chicago politics reign over IL. I've heard it time and time again, and we have it here in MI too with Detroit, that the mayor of Chicago is the real governor of IL.

Here's the good news, I hope you IL guys are listening. You have a LOT of friends in law enforcement. In my summer training gig with IL cops, I meet maybe 150 cops a year; they are all from Chicago-area suburbs and a few from CPD itself, with a few Feds sprinkled in. Let's see.... six years, that's about 900 cops. Now I don't get into an in-depth conversation with each one about civilian gun ownership, but I've heard a LOT of them drop unsolicited comments in favor of it, and a LOT of them are even activist about it to varying degrees. When I strike up a conversation about it I get an earfull! I can honestly say I've NEVER heard one say citizens should not have guns. Some of these guys are highly placed cops-- up to and including chiefs-- and they are definitely against this kind of legislation, and they universally hold IL politics and politicians in contempt.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread here but what happens to some of us happens to all of us. The silly laws our friends in CA have to deal with are being seen as examples of "a good start" by politicians in your state, wherever you are. If this passed in IL it would take a chunk out of our industry and a lot of companies would have to scramble to other locations, but the worst thing is, it would encourage such criminally dangerous political shenannigans elsewhere.

Any LTW reader who does not belong to the NRA: you need to join yesterday if you want a shot at keeping your guns without going to jail.

Bob's is a high B but he has enough natural ability to make it to M.

As to the Illinois situation, I read a news story posted on another gun forum that said that Les Baer has waived the white flag and is moving his entire operation across the Mississippi to Iowa. It really is sad how a small handful of myopic officials will end up costing the state hundreds of jobs, that won't be replaced, and several million dollars of tax revenue when Rock River, Springfield, Armalite and most gunsmiths follow suit.

Thanks for sharing the pics, Gunner!

The match was really fun and well run. The match officials, RO's, and behind the scenes folks all deserve huge attaboys for a job well done. Most of all I had a great time making new friends and watching some amazing shooting. Of course Ned puts this squad together, but doesn't shoot on it. It was pretty amusing, as we didn't all know each other, but knew we had a connection somehow....."uh, sooo...how do you know Ned?" Guys from our squad placed 11th, 19th, 32, and up. All of them great guys.

Yes, the match was pretty straightforward, which was a great relief to me. I hadn't shot a USPSA match since 1998, and then only club matches. Of late I've seen video clips of stages from USPSA Nat's that were fairly elaborate, that frankly had me a bit intimidated because of the amount of choreography involved. Of course, this didn't prevent me from making some real bonehead mistakes anyways

Tokarev, it was great to meet you. I felt your pain on stage 11. We shot it as our 2nd stage of the day, so we didn't have it quite as bad as you with the sun. That one really gave a lot of folks fits. If you haven't done so, drop me your address so I can get your package out.

Got to drool over Burton's gorgeous prize gun, what a work of art. Whoever took it home has a real treasure. I was just bummed that a masterpiece like that did not get more exposure...could be wrong, but I didn't even see it on display until just before the awards ceremony...not sure many folks got to see it. And like Ned said last year, Jason is extremely competent with a 45!

Springfield Armory. What a great bunch of people. Their support of our industry and the sport is truly impressive! I could go on and on but they really deserve our support!

Bob Novak's magwell is simply humongous! I could not believe it would fit in the IDPA/single stack box, but it just barely does. It's a competition only part that can be installed with just a little fitting....very clever! Yet another great dude, we had a real nice chat.

On the sign language thing, Ned you know you gave the real watered down PG rated version of the sign meaning...in truth it gets a serious R rating. Actually I did know all the guys, as I shot with them all day. Even with my electronic muffs, I could not hear boisterous laughter as I was shooting, what a gracious bunch. And I sure owed Jess for not only bringing my match ammo from AR, but carrying it all the way up the hill to the very furthest stage possible (all 300 rds.)!!! Thanks for introducing me to Sharyn, she is one cool gal and great shooter...hope to hear more from her around here.

Didn't get to take many pics, but here's one you might enjoy. You get ONE guess as to whose rig this is:

Well, not sure whose rig that is but I must say I've never seen a more handsome elbow 8)

This year I placed one place higher than last year. Another 62 years and Rob Leatham's reign at the SSC is OVER, you hear me, OVER!

It is sad that Chicago runs the state, how many people in the rural areas vote??? I would bet 40-45% max, they need to get off the butts and speak up.

NRA......not everyone agrees with everything they do but that is NOT a excuse not to join....they are the best hope we have to keep the gun grabbers at bay, every gun owner and Second Amendment supporter should join. IT is sad that the NRA only has 4 million memebers. Image what they could do with 20+ million memebers backing them in DC.

Ned.......did you really shoot the SSC with a IWB holster??????? If you did and finished as high as you did, you are my hero. Just amazing.

Thanks gunner. IWB and usually factory ball, although this year I used a handload with 230 Gold Dots at 175000 PF or so. I can get about 30FPS more and less recoil with GD's than other 230 jacketed pills, I stumbled onto this little phenom and have used it the last two years (although I will admit I BARELY made major last year).

Ned, it was an absolute pleasure to meet you in person, finally! :D You have no idea of the drama you just missed on that stage... my mind was in a whirlwind of thoughts when I heard "Are you from Texas?"... huh?!?! I wish I would have known you were in the squad behind ours, sooner. That would have been cool to hang out and chat more. I would love to shoot Single Stack Nationals next year, maybe we can squad up then?

It was great to meet Stan Chen too. What super nice people y'all are!!! :D

Here's a little video I put together from our squad.

Single Stack Nationals 2007

All of the stages are in there, except Miller Time (? the house/place your magazines all over stage) and the Dark House (my best stage :( ). And check this out... how ironic!!!
Quote:
2007 USPSA_Single_Stack_Nationals - Stage 1 THINGS THAT GO BUMP

Tie Ned Christiansen 174 B Single Stack 57 0 8.55 6.6667 40.8278 68.05%

Wow!!! After shooting Open exclusively for the past 3 years (of my 3 1/2 year shooting "career") that was a TOUGH match for me! All those reloads... and that dot on the slide just didn't look right...

What a FUN match!!! Everyone who shoots should put this on their "to-do-before-I-die" list!!!

I'm not sure what gun you're referring to... but my friend and squadmate, Keith Dilworth, (second shooter in the video) won the custom Springfield 1911 (Heinie?), for shooting his Springfield in the match. He is very happy with it!!!

Just a funny side note (if this is the gun you're talking about) Keith's Springfield broke on our second to last stage (when I "formally" met Ned). Ned, I almost asked for your help (then met Stan Chen, too! :D ) but Keith ended up finishing the match with a borrowed STI. Ironically, he had tremendous difficulty with the STI and was actually chosen for TWO of the Springfield guns. They told him he couldn't have both and he had to choose one... he chose the Custom. :D

It's all about to happen again.....

Stan sent me some ammo to bring to the '08 match for him.... got it today.

Buddy, I tested it for you, about half of it, and it seemed a little light. The ones that were left, I pulled the bullets and added 4 grains more or less of FFG black powder. The last thing I want is for you to be caught with ammo that doesn't make Major........ and think of the psychological advantage of all that smoke and recoil. Our squadmates and everybody else (those who are downwind at least) will quiver in fear and/or nausea. No need to thank me...... well, OK, if you want to just kinda maybe mention me a little as you go forward to receive your prize, I guess that would not be out of line. I will pretend to be surprised.

Oh, don't worry about not having enough, I am not about to short you. The empties from the ones I fired? Tumbled them in cat litter and reloaded them for ya with.... well, some stuff I've had kinda taking up space on my reloading bench for a couple, um, decades. Some 155's, some 185's, and some 300 grainers left over from my .45-70 days. And a few .44 bullets, not sure what they weigh, they were kinda loose in the cases but I crimped them in real good with some Channel Locks. I used the same charge in all of them, enough Winchester 760 rifle powder with a little left over Green Dot mixed in, I'm pretty sure the 300 grainers at least will make major.

Should be a great match!

I'll see you there...well maybe, hopefully. I shoot on Saturday, driving up Friday afternoon straight from work. Most excited about the match, it was a good time and fun match to shoot last year, my first SSC, not the lst for sure.

I put down the Open gun for another SSN... what a great match! We shoot tomorrow, and I look forward to seeing LTW peeps again. I'll be wearing my LTW colors... ;)

Ned, we're right across the street from you and would be happy to join you in hydration activities. :D

I'll post some video again too! Maybe I'll break 50% this year now that I've learned how to shoot steel with iron sights. ;)

Hello Ned! It was good to talk to Stan and you at the Single Stack. Still hard for me to believe a RO question your use of a Summer Special Holster. I understood what you had to say about the RO's concern for safety, but I agreed with Patrick Sweeny that it was a mute point. Hope to see you all again next year.

OK, didn't see this thread till I got back from the match....needless to say THAT explains a lot!!! Wasn't too concerned when they chrono'd me at 280 power factor, just figured the edgers on steel might have a shot at falling down. It was the black powder plume of smoke that killed me cause I had to wait about 9 seconds between shots to pick up the next target. This, and ONLY this, explains my less than top 10 finish.

Yes, it was a great match! Hats off once again to Bill Davis, Russel Cluver, the stats folks and all the hard working RO's who made it so. A lot of straight ahead tests of shooting skill, which some like and some don't (sorry Gunner :( ) Of course the standards were quite challenging again. One string was timed fire, 6 seconds to draw and engage 3 turning papers at 25 yds w/ 2 rounds each, reload and engage with another 2 rounds each. Fastest 6 seconds of my life, made me want to protest for a range malfunction, but of course the only malf was in my brain.

Met some great new folks and got to visit with "old" friends.

Tokarev, great shooting by you and so solid by the whole Border Patrol team, great to see you again. One of Tok's team mates shot really well and managed to win a custom pistol built by some unknown smith, looked OK as far as I could tell though. Great dude, glad he won it!

Gary great to see you again, I hope your squad treated you better than we did last year.

Sharyn, good to see you girl.....thanks for flying the LTW colors! Sharyn was sporting a slick pro shooter's shirt emblazoned with the LTW logo...looked awesome. Please post a link to your vids when you get them done. I know, we are gluttons for punishment what with having to reload and deal with recoil. And don't worry, Ned was plenty hydrated.

I learned that Patrick Sweeney, in addition to being a gunwriter/editor, is better than a Frommer's guide to European travel. I know who I'm calling the next time I need to figure out how to best spend 2 weeks in Italy!

Shane from AZ, great to meet and chat with you....you are a real connoisseur. Hope to see you at some matches in AZ.

Most of all I'm glad that me and Matfie survived our stay at the local, ahem, "historical" hotel which was about a 1/4 step above staying at the local YMCA. This was prompted by Ned who was I think was looking for bullet holes left in the walls by the Dillinger gang. Glad to have been able to hang and shoot with you Matt, thanks for all your training insights!

I'll see if I can dig up a pic or two.....

Stan, I just pay attention to what my wife finds out. If I told her the budget for Italy trips was only $100 plus what I could make picking up deposit bottles before the flight out, you can depend on:

Her finding the lowest-cost flights to and from

And me doing marathon road sweeps for $0.10 cans. (My choice, I like Italy too.)

The trick isn't re-inventing the wheel each time you need to move something, but learning from those who already have wheels.

Nice gun, by the way.
