Hi guys,

Can any one tell me the pro's and Con's of both these styles?

I havn't tried either but they both look good.

Is one better suited for a 1911 Commander over another?

what do you all think?

rccolt,

I have both styles, in Government and Commander lengths. I had the PCH for a Commander-length gun first, and have since acquired the others. All are Alessi, with the exception of the Commander-length ISP-SS from Matt Del Fatti, shown here on a recent post.

The most obvious advantage is that the PCH can be snapped on and off without removing the belt. That's not the case with the GWH, which threads onto your belt. However, I've found that for my build, the lower profile of the GWH/ISP-SS is better for me overall. Once you suit up, it's on until you take the belt off, but that's a minor price to pay for the comfort and stability afforded by the design.

If I'm going out somewhere and I know I'll be taking the gun off (to go into the Post Office, for example), I'll wear a holster that I can simply unsnap and store in the safe I keep in the console. But for extended wear, I find the GWH/ISP-SS design to be the best one for me so far.

Hi Buck, thanks for the reply.

Tell me why specificly, does the PCH ride too high or low or is it bulky or what?

rccolt,

No issues with the PCH re: ride height, angle or stability - it's a great holster, and as you can tell from the picture of my first one that I posted, that particular holster has seen a lot miles. If you were to take away all my holsters but the PCHs, I would not jump off a bridge - we're only talking a matter of very few degrees here.

But I'm 6'4" and 212 lbs, and the forward wing of the PCH occasionally gets me a bit when seated in my vehicle. Since switching over to the GWH/ISP-SS style, I've also taken to wearing the holster closer to 0900 than 0800, which is where I wore the PCH for a couple of years, and that may be a factor, too.

As I said, I still have my PCHs, and wear them from time to time when I know I'm going to have to take the holster off, but for most daily carry and training applications, the GWH/ISP-SS designs get the nod.

How lucky a problem is this to have? Lou's holsters, or Matt's? Two great guys, and two great product lines.

There are pictures on this board of a PCH with sewn loop if that's the most important thing for somebody.

I find the GWH suits me - I have one each black and cordovan color and also one each ACP for OWB wear chosen as tending to carry and present much the same. Notice the GWH tends to be a very close fit on the belt needing a domed - skived edge - belt and it makes for a great rig especially with pants that have a structured waistband.

I suspect the PCH might be a tad more comfortable for some people - maybe with less constructed pants as well. I also suspect the CQ series is a tad better match with the PCH just as the ACP and GWH make a fine pair. I'd suggest choosing a carry that matched holsters past - that was part of my own choice - and the PCH didn't exist yet.

I also have several of each but find the PCH to be the superior design in my case. It has more of a "wing" than the GWH which adds to the stability and comfort. While my GWHs pretty much collect dust for now I have no intentions of selling them. There just too hard to come by!!

I wear a PCH daily and love it, but I'm unfamiliar with a GWH. Does anyone have a pic that they can post?

What concerns me about the GWH is the belt loop. I have some pants that the loop on the pants is right where the holster belt loop should be. Does anyone have this problem.

Also do both style ride about the same height?

I would be carrying at the 3:00 does this make a difference with either style?

Yep, that was a problem for me. I wasn't able to wear mine where I wanted to. It's a great holster if it works with your pants/body style. I never tried a PCH but a lot of folks out there really like them.

Rob...I've had the same problem. One solution that worked very well for me was to find a "concealed-carry friendly tailor" and had the belt loops on some of my pants relocated (slightly) to accomodate the holster and various ggodies that I had hanging from my belt at the time. Worked very well for me, was far less expensive than buying another holster (and retiring a very expensive one I couldn't use) and the tailor was very attentive to my needs. Otherwise I would have had to move that holster back to about the 5 o'clock position, which has never been very comfortable (or accessable) for me. Surely a dapper young prosecutor like yourself already has a good tailor on retainer there in Richmond!! Have a great weekend ol' buddy!
