This one just returned for a clean and oil.
I built it about 15 years ago.
Looks as if it has been carried a bit.
I love the worn bluing!
:D

It would be totally cool if all the smiths associated with this forum conspired to produce a "family reunion" thread. 8) ... a guaranteed smash hit.

Not much response to the post, but I'll stick up some more pics anyways!

This is one of mine, soon to be sporting A Gemtech Blackside!
Watch out jackrabbits.

Not much response because we're just admiring your work in speechless awe! Now those pics of a LW commander- is that skateboard tape on your frontstrap??? I never considered that the SF MR07 would block the CT Lasergrip-nice elegant solution to that issue. Also, is that aluminum frame Robar NP3'd?

Love the Commander with the rail!
I have wanted to set up something like that
myself for some time now but most people tell me I am
crazy as if your putting a light on your carrying in a drop leg or exposed on the hip so why not just carry a full sized (cuz I like a Commander that why and this post inspired me to just go ahead and DO IT!)

Do you happen to the know type of holster this was carried in?
Even better what model holster?

I couldnt seem to find a drop leg with light (wanted the Safariland)

Honest man, that Chuck!

Not afraid to show the personal companion it all its well-used glory.... the mark of a guy who really knows something about packing a 1911!

The carry-comp belongs to a vetted customer. Think Forbes Top 400 list.

The other two are mine.
The LW Commander was built for a local customer some years ago, then bought back by me. I added a few features to the top end. The aluminum lower was nickled by Mahovsky. For years, I used it as my 'going out to dinner gun', carried in my Spark's Executive Companion.
It wasn't getting much use, so I added the easily removed Surefire rail.
Now, in conjunction with the laser grips, it's my 'rabbit and bedside' gun.
Yup! That is skateboard tape! I'd hate to ruin the nice plating job but I require traction on the frontstrap. Inelegant solution, but 'hey' it's mine.

Chuck,

What great pistols. I do love "old warriors" that have earned their place in the vault.

Thanks for sharing them with us.

I like the way 1911 looks with grip safety pinned. You rarely see a picture of one posted.

Oh hell yes ... this is great! Even more fun than looking at fresh builds! It's probably the most fun I've had wearing pants ... oops, sorry. It's obvious that I don't get out much.

...but please keep them coming.

I like the comp work on the first gun. Nice to see a carry gun that was not only carried but obviously had regular shooting. It's pretty cool looking but is a comp effective with a 45?

I've heard many logical arguments questioning the effectiveness of compensators used with low pressure rounds such as .45 ACP. I'm no expert, but can say with great confidence that my 5" compensated .45 ACP Springfield built by John Harrison several years ago has recoil and muzzle lift much less noticable than my Glock 17 (9mm). This comparison is based on several thousand rounds fired through each gun in direct A-B comparisons over many range visits.

In comparison with firing the same 200 grn LSWC .45 round hand-loaded to 920 fps through a non-compensated, heavy-barreled Colt GM, the compensated Springfield feels like a rimfire conversion. Some of the advantage could simply be caused by the forward weight bias created by the heavy barrel and compensator. But either way, take my unqualified opinion for what it's worth ... the compensator works just fine for .45 ACP in my case.

I love seeing the close up shot of the front grip carry commander. Those worn points on the checkering really tell a story.

Chuck,

Really nice, I definitely like your daily carry, very clean and well done, yet obviously utilitarian.

That's what I love about blued guns: Even when worn, they have so much character!

Is that last pistol blued or does it have a Blact-T type finish?

Chuck never gets out of the shop or house...the wear is from scratching himself while watching the Playboy channel!

Carry-comps were all the rage for an afternoon back at the end of the Reagan era. Firearms instructors hate them, and say they aren't good for carry, but your customer obviously doesn't think so.

Use, but not abuse, adds character to a gun.

There's nothing unsightly about a good patina on an old hogleg. The comped commander's owner feels bad enough about that finish and I'll gladly take her, smudged makeup and all. Holster sheen is better than safe dust.
