Well ive recently been bitten by the single action bug...bad.
Been scouting the local shops for nice Ruger single actions without much luck until today. Found this NIB Ruger Vaquero Bisley .44 magnum, 4-5/8". Wasnt really looking for a Vaquero style pistol but the Bisley frame pushed me over the edge (along with the price being reasonable and theThad Rybka cross draw holster, it didnt take much thought).

Will probably be taking this to John Gallagher for some mild tuning/tweaking here and there. Also trying to figure out what is the best load to regulate the front sight for, im not a reloader so factory loads are a must (thinking the Federal Premium 300 gr flat nose).

Any how, here are some pics, if any one else has one or knows much about them feel free to chime in, ive not seen any other .44 Bisley Vaqueros since ive been looking for single actions.

Matt,
I have some (3) with the 5 1/2" barrel. This configuration is not rare, just not the most common. I have one .44 magnum and two in .45 Colt. I think your choice of Federal Premium 300 grain Cast Core is a good load to regulate the sight for.

A few years ago Ross Seyfried wrote an article for Guns & Ammo about why a 5 1/5" Ruger Bisley Vaquero in .45 Colt as his answer for one hand gun.

I know its not a "rare" pistol, I just dont see as many in .44 when looking around.

talked to John friday, dropping the pistol off monday, here is a short list of work Im going to ask him to do so far-

Action job (really gritty right now)
Turn back barrel and re cut gap
Recrown barrel/remove warning
Steel ejector rod housing/crescent rod button
Regulate front sight for Fed. 300 gr.
Chamfer leading edge of cylinder
Black Walnut grips
detail finsih/rust blue

edited to add- cylinder gap, end play etc were all very tight for factory, just gonna leave that alone. Already had a steel ejector rod housing too..

Took the pistol to John yesturday, suprisingly it has very tight barrel gap and end shake, no need to even address it really. Ejector rod housing is steel from the factory, so thats one less thing to do. Decided against the crescent shapped rod button.

Revised the list a bit to an Action job, base pin, free spin pawl, black powder chamfer, regulate, detail and satin blue... may have him make a set of Walnut grips or just fit the oversize stock grips.. not sure yet.

I can really see where these single actions are addicting, especially with Gallagher right down the road

John Gallagher is one of the finest individuals out there in the business. You will not be disappointed with his work and his business ethic.

I'm glad others enjoy Thad's work as much as I do! Great piece.
