I picked this Series 70 up about a year ago. It has some unusual cuts on the frame and the rear sight.

Does this work look familiar to any of you? I was just wondering if anyone recognized this work and could tell me anything about who might have done it.

I don't have a clue who did it, but that is the "standard" installation for a low mount Millett rear. The instructions for installation came with the sight and suggested the rounded cuts done with a ball end mill. I did a few back in the day for guys who insisted on having them, but much prefer the BOMAR or even Wichita over the Millett. They do seem to work fine and hold up well.

Great pics! Looks like a totally sano install. I was always told that the Millets didn't have an accurate, repeatable click adjustment compared to Bo-Mars. I don't know, never had any except on a revolver and I haven't had time to play with it enough to say. The other point in favor of the Bo-Mar was the sight picture.
I don't know who did the work but, I personally think that you've got a nice piece and would be happy to carry it. What area of the country did you get it from? Original owner?? Any markings on the inside or under the grips?

I have that same sight/install on one of my guns. It held up to five years of weekly IPSC matches.

I think the sight is a Millet sight. It is installed per Millet directions of 20 years ago. These were fairly common 20 years ago if memory serves me. I am 70 and have owned 1911s since I was 14. Times were diufferent then. The ball cuts are done after the sight is installed. I have seen several 20 years ago but none recently. I saw one Dave did 20 years ago when he was in CO. If memory serves me he said he had done about a half a dozen in those days when I asked him about the pistol 4 or 5 years ago.

I go in the AM to CO for an Elk and Mule Deer hunt and will be off line. I will look for further comments when I return.

Thanks for all the replies.

I bought it in Gadsden, Alabama from a local gun store. The owner said he accuired it in an estate sale. I picked it up pretty much how you see it (except for the grips--I put them on) for only $600. I think I did well.

There are no markings or signatures on it. I looked under the grips and everywhere else I could see.

I have been shooting 1911's for about 15 years or so and had never seen any cuts like this. From some of the posts, it must not have been as unique as I thought.

Here's one more pic:

You did good for $600 IMHO. I saw on set up similarly here in East TN 20+ years ago but don't know who did it.

It is not common now and I do not recall ever seeing this on the internet. It is a very nice look in my opinion and I agree you got a very nice pistol out of the estate.
