I have a question for the forum members. I found a full custom Colt Delta SS for sale. The previous owner modified it shoot 40 cal. It hasn't been shot much maybe around 1500 to 2000 rounds.

Here's a little about the gun.
Colt Delta SS
Adjustable Bomar's
Nowlin barrel with comp
SA mag well
Checkered front & rear strap
Checkered rear slide
Trigger job
Extended mag release
Ambi safetys
With 7 mags
Price 650.00 plus tax Is the gun worth the money?
Since the gun has been changed to shoot 40 cal can will it shoot 10mm like the Smith & Wesson 610? If not can a factory 10mm barrel be installed and then shoot 10mm?

Thanks TJ

I'd be more worried about who did the "custom" work than the components it comes with. There are way too many 1911 hacks out there and you need to be carefull. The fact that he "modified it" to shoot .40 cal sets off all sorts of warning lights.

I'd pass and never look back.

Thanks for the repy. I looked at the gun pretty well. The work is first rate. It looks as good as any of the Browns, Hoags, Wilsons or Baers I have.

My main question can a 40 cal gun also shoot 10mm with a barrel change.

In the words of a wise man who frequents this board, "You get what you pay for, front end or back."

$650 for a "full custom" Delta would be enough to make me walk away, espeically given that you can't find a bone stock Delta for that price let alone one worked over by a quality 'smith.

Yes, the 10mm slide will work for .40 S&W (and .357 Sig, too, I believe). So if you have a .40 S&W and a 10mm barrel, swapping them out will work fine, though it's quite likely that the point of aim for the two different barrels will be significantly different. (Though that would be true of two different 10mm barrels as well.)

Sweeney's 1911 book has a section about doing this. As a matter of fact, Colt offered the Delta in a .40S&W and 10m combo, called the Ten/Forty, though I don't believe they made many.

If the safety snaps on and off nicely, the hammer doesn't follow the slide home, the grip safety works and so on you might have found a nice deal.

For that price any problems that come up later could be easily solved and in the mean time you've got a nice shooter.

While I agree that there are hacks out there, there are also a lot of "no name" gunsmiths that can do pretty solid work but lack the marketing skills or good luck to make to the level we're all used to here.

I wouldn't rule it out because it is a good deal, but then again I've got a lot of Dutch heritage...

the last comment is so very true, there are a handfull of really good no name gunsmiths, so if you know 1911's at all, take it apart, look it over, and find out for yourself, it could be your lucky day!!

Sounds like old (dated) IPSC technology. No one shoots a .40 S&W with a comp anymore. As for shooting 10MM, just have the chamber lengthen to 10MM specs. If you're happy with the quality then I'd take it, at least it would be a nice platform for building something else.
