No doubt about it the Hi-Power is still a mainstay in the custom pistol industry. Lots of custom makers produce various iterations of the classic Browning design but no matter which way you cut it there are certain things that a Hi-Power just needs. At our shop those “needs” are the foundation of the SRT conversion... and the result is a solid re-working of a very usable design.

Image

Start with a high-cut front strap laid out with a nice pattern of sharkskin stippling to both it and the back strap... now mix in a well thought out reliability tune, flattened and serrated slide top, and useable sights such as the Heinie set on this gun and you’re on the way. Throw in a trigger job with a host of trigger modifications such as a polished and re-worked trigger, high-cut and bobbed hammer, tool steel C&S sear, as well as Ted’s one of a kind thumb safety to round out the controls and the gun starts to come into its own and make those newly acquired sights even a bit more useable. Open up the mag-well for eased re-loading, de-horn the gun, and in this case add a KKM match grade barrel and the conversion is almost complete... the only thing left to do on this piece was a nice matte hard chrome finish.

Although many would incorrectly categorize the Hi-Power (along with the 1911) as old and archaic, after using a shooting guns like these it’s pretty easy to see why after all these years both pistols continue to have such a strong following.

Very beautiful Hi Power. The Half ... um I mean Hi Power is the sexiest single action semi auto pistol that stand the test of time. They just don't make them like that anymore. You guys at the Yo Bo shop keep up the great work.

That's nice.
The HiPower is "almost there" as it comes. You guys finish it up well.

I've been thinking about refinishing my SRT after almost a year of everyday carry, training, practice, matches, etc. I had been looking at various black wonder finishes and not really considering hard chrome, but those pictures may well change that.

Jason,
That is the best looking Hi Power I have ever seen. The matte hard chrome is simply gorgeous and the craftsmanship is superb but causes me to ask a couple of questions.

I notice that some of the contact parts are hard chromed as well including the hammer and firing pin stop. Also, the rails on the slide and frame. How durable is the hard chrome and will it break away or peel away, especially on the hammer contact surfaces?

I am assuming that the internal surfaces of the slide and frame are also plated and wonder how they hold up to the powder blast and residue? I know it can be somewhat corrosive.

Questions from a Hi Power newbie.

Thanks,
Tex

Well ! Just got home late from work and its been a tuff 16 hour day. Iam a little upset that i missed the Fed Ex driver otherwise that Yost work of art would be in my hands right now. Jason, thank you for the great pictures and awesome service and thanks to Ted for crafting such an awesome piece. I cant wait to see it in person and YES, i will be at the range this weekend. Iam waiting for a Matt Del Fatti, black on black sharkskin trim inside the waistband holster for it. It will make a nice combo ! This is my first gun from the Yo-Bo group and iam sure not the last.

I have alway had a spot in the heart for a Classic looking Browning. This one is very, very, nice.

Notice the blending and reserrating of the rear sight. Very nice personal touch. The high cut under the trigger guard as well as the contour and leaving 4 lines on the trigger make for a very, classic functional handgun.

Strange how the modern we get in handgun design (polymer etc.) the more the standards of the industry keep on coming back. i.e. 1911, BHP just to name two.

There is just something cool about a hard chromed Hi-Power, the gun just says "use me and abuse me". Excellent work as always gentlemen.

Dang Jason!

Now I want to get my SRT chromed. Too many projects and not enough funds.

Great work.

Nah, no need to worry about that... hard chrome is, well, hard and as long as the application is done correctly the chances of "peeling" are pretty slim. Points of interaction will of course show some wear but in terms of abrasion resistance hard chrome is probably the best finish out there. Same goes for wear due to powder residue and the like.

Sorry pally... the rig is one of Lou's DOJ holsters and the mag carrier is his as well.

The P35 is beautiful in hard chrome - who did it for you Jason?

I know what you mean about missing the FedEx truck. I use a FedEx Kinko's to ship from 6 blks from where I live - then have it shipped back to the same FedEx Kinko's on "Will Call"...that way I can stop by after work and pick up the package without worrying about missing the day truck, or running the package down at the nearest hub center...which is usually 15 miles away.
