I was thinking the other day about some of my really early work, how some things have changed and some have stayed the same…… especially the many things I did not know then, and how much I am still learning. Once that stops I’d better find another job……

Bear in mind that some of these things I would not do these days, but it was all part of the ongoing learning process.

I was really going for snag-free, even way back. This is work from 1979 and 80. Rear sight: set into a pocket and silver soldered in place.
Image

Back then I was fascinated with the EDM and had to do a rip-off MagnaPort job on everything that fell into my clutches. Seems dumb now. Bushing is made from scratch and has two lugs, not just one. I think this was right after I busted my first Series 70 bushing. Finish on the bushing is Nitex….. barrel has been buit up with chrome on the end and then ground with an annular, radiused ring for lockup, thanks Mr. Behlert for taking it as a compliment when I showed you how I used your idea!
Image

Three more of that rear sight.

This top end for the same gun came later in my pin shooting career, 1985. This one has sent a lot of pins to that big bowling alley in the sky. Worked OK, a little loud, but it didn’t look like anything else out there at the time.

Witchita rear sight set forward for protection. At the time I preferred them over BoMars. Notice the sight base is.... not there.
Image
Image

The obligatory squared trigger guard and I guess you could say the first Conamyds. Each of those is a pointy little cone…. I made a special fixture to machine a set of electrodes from Copper-impregnated Poco 3 graphite and EDM’d the pattern on.
Image
Image
Image

The muzzle view of the uncompensated top end.
Image

Another snagless rear sight, this one from ’83. I was building a subcompact .45—this was right before the Colt Officers ACP came out.
Image
Image

The front end. Somebody was recently asking about cut down G-Models…. This one as you can see has a little rearward extension to the dustcover silver soldered in place. It held up for what little I fired this setup but, as incredibly strong as a silver joint is, it would not go the distance. I abandoned this top end. Bushing is another two-lugger--- I wound up silvering it in place, and……
Image

….the barrel comes out the bottom a la Browning HiPower. Barrel body length is reduced to two locking lugs to get all the stroke I could. I still feel to this day that, at least in .45, one is enough—but three is better, no doubt about it.
Image

These days I have an OACP slide for it--- it’s an ongoing project—since 1983. And some people think I make them wait 
Image

The bottom end. Yes, it is thinner than it should be under the MSH retaining pin….. frame ws originally a Commander frame.

Ned, it's cool to see your work from the '80's. Even by today's standards, your modifications can be viewed as innovative and stepping outside the box. Very cool, and I certainly appreciate you sharing with us.

And to think, the only thing I have left from the '80's is a few Quiet Riot tapes and pictures of Dad with a mullet. You definitely got me beat!

Those are really cool.
It is nice to see that you have always worked outside the box:)

BTW I really dig the look of those "snag-less" sights

Ned,

Thanks for sharing those, very interesting. Can you tell me about the grip safety on the pin gun -- interesting tang?

Pin shootin' in parachute pants and a members only jacket (with skinny tie), I can see it now. :D

Very cool! Nice to see some of the ideas in the making. I am working thru a front sight project as we speak. I am going over these hoping to find an idea or two to steal.

sh$t - I was still in the 3rd grade when that first picture was taken - how old are you?? Probably right up there with Theo I bet

That rear sight on the first one is trick - a little tough to adjust for windage though!

There's some saying about how old age and treachery beat youth and something else but I can't remember it right now.

I bet that rear sight could have wrecked havoc on a six pack of longnecks in the days before the twist off. Another thing I noticed is the slide stop appears to be two piece. Was that to make the shaft oversize for a tight fit.

Yeah, that's it! Anyhow I have to go to bed now. My gosh, I ate my senior special dinner about four hours ago.

I'll leave it Ned to keep these young whipper snappers in line!

Cool stuff Ned!

Ned,
I am pretty sure you were doing stuff in 1980 that NO ONE Was thinking about (like those radical sights!).

Thanks guys--

The grip safety, I don't know, maybe an early Safari Arms.

Adjusting the rear sight? Simple-- just make a new barrel bushing with the bore offset the right amount in the right direction :?

The tapped hole in the Colt slide stop was for a metal button. There was one on the comp too, and I made a holster out of plastic sheet that had two keyholes in it, you only had to lift the gun about 1/2" to "clear plastic". Not a new idea mind you-- somebody was doing it in the 1880's for Colt six shooters and probably long before that for flintlocks.

Me, old? I'm only 28.... until I look in the mirror.....

Couldn't you just open up the rear sight a little on one side to change it? :)

Yeah, but cutting a bushing is the only time Ned's boring.
oi, that's gotta be the single worst pun I've ever made.

Still, I sat here a week ago sketching up a weld-on replacement sight for a Detonics, and if I had a scanner, it'd be scary to see the similarities.
Least I know the concept's proven

Old age and treachery nothing! Every time one of us young pups think we're being slick, Ned whips out some old work horse to show how the original worked out.
Now I know how television writers feel trying to come up with a plot the Simpson's haven't already used.
Michigun's might as well change their slogan to "Already done it."

Edit: Oops. Quick question-- the pinned slidestop-- was that a Pachmeyer accurizer?
I get the idea of an oversized slide-stop pin, seems like Frank's design was a bit overkill, but beneficial to frame flex.
Or was that simply for the Nedly Ghost-holster precursor?

That's just the original Colt slide stop with a hole in 'er.

I'll see if I can get some time to scan some old pics.

One day we will all have to refer to Ned by a single alphabet letter like "Q" and to get on his list you will have to have a "double 00" last name 8)
I know your not taking gun work right now, but what about ejection seats? I really need one right now!
