No doubt about it there are times when a simpler gun, or rather a gun built to a more understated level, just seems right. This Lightweight Commander in 38 Super is just such a piece...

Image

The owner knew that Retro was just the way to go with this build and after giving his general spec’s he let Ted take the wheel and drive the project in just the right direction. The gun received all upgraded internals as well as new ignition components that produce a very useable 4# trigger. A Kart ramped barrel was fit to an EGW bushing and the controls were enhanced with an Ed Brown single side safety. In addition to having all frame and slide lines straightened and the front strap high-cut and serrated a Yost Retro rear sight was added and teamed up with a silver soldered ramped front with gold line insert. The slide was bordered, ejection port lowered and flared, the mag-well beveled, and true to the retro theme a custom grip safety was shaped and blended to the aluminum frame to give just the right meld of old school look and modern user friendliness. The only thing left to do was add the finishing touch of Elephant Ivory stocks inlaid with antique silver Colt emblems.

Throw in a Sparks Summer Special and a couple of matching magazine carriers and the whole package is ready for use... enjoy the pictures! :D

Simply incredible. Glad to see more stylish retro guns leaving the shop.

I also noticed you have updated the site with high-resolution photos of.. well, everything, which may force me to buy one of those industrial waterproof keyboards.. or maybe just get a bib.

Another beuatiful gun.

What did you start with to create the retro (very Hoag-looking) beavertail ?

Looks great and I really like the beaver tail mod. I've often wondered if that little end is even needed or if it does anything. Taking it off makes for a tough looking piece.

That is a very well thought out and classy pistol. I like everything about it.

I see you listed the grip safety as custom which I assume is one of a kind. If you can mass produce some I think you would have a winner on your hands.

Jason - couldn't agree more about the beavertail mod. Very cool and classic. You are also taking "pikkertakin'" to the next level. I am referring to the cartridge reflection in the polished slide flat in image #10. Seems too perfect to be serendipitous. Me and my old Canon PowerShot have been left far, far behind.

Very nice work with that grip safety, it really compliments the rest of the build. Clean and simple at first glance, but many understated details pop out after a second look. It's a good concept all around.

This gun is mine and I waited a long time to have Ted & Jason do it. It was made to my specs however they made a few suggestions to help enhance the "retro" ideas I had in mind, and the finished product is simply beautiful.

Thanks to Ted & Jason, and to the rest of you who have provided such nice comments.

Ted & Jason this is very clean, and Retro is alive 'n well. No silly bumps on the grip safety, and beautifully contoured! The rest of the Commander is detailed perfectly - love the antique medallions in the ivory...very classy Commander! You should market this grip safety, you would sell a ton of them! Whose did you use as a starting point?

Well done guys!

Simply astounding! Elegant and functional beauty. Exactly what a "gentleman's pistol" should be. It seems almost banal at this point given the work that HP consistently lays out, but congratulations on another extraordinary build.

I just took a nice 38 super lightweight in trade. I guess I know where that will go soon.

Notice the reflection of the cartridge on the slide in that one photo. those are pure class, and the guns not bad either. :)

Awesome.

I really wish someone would make that grip safety available commercially.

I understand that Jim Hoag still has the mold for his version of the grip safety.

Will someone step up and try to buy it from him ? I'd have that design installed on all my carry guns.

VERY Nice Gun! the Maker AND the Owner can be proud of THAT one! Kinda' reminda me of a similar LW Commander Ted built for a certain Gator-huntin' Cajun about four or five years ago...seems like it ended up in the Midwest somewhere?...the "Bad News" is that I missed out when Donnie sold it...the "Good News" is that I have a NICE LW Commander in 9mm just sittin' around, while I try to decide on EXACTLY what I want done to IT... :) ....mikey357
