Picked up this Colt 1991A1 in mint condition for a good price. The slide to frame fit seems good and the lock up is very tight. It was clearly used very little. 200rnds at the range this afternoon and no malfunctions of any kind. Joy. My basic plan for this gun right now is:

New MSH
New sites
New trigger and removal of series 80 safety
New hammer
New hand fitted bushing
New grips
Front strap checkering
new springs all around
New coating (will probably just get standard blueing)

Will most likely keep the barrel as that's a few hundred saved right there and it seems well fitted. Some of things I am not sure of, are some of the other parts such as the extractor, ejector, etc. in terms ft quality, MIM, etc. I was told most of what Colt used for smaller parts where good, so hopefully most of it can stay. I am no smith, but the smith I work with told me most of what Colt used was generally high quality. Gun will be mostly CCW and some IDPA.

I bought a circa 1998 pistol that looked a lot like that one. I had decided, before even buying it, which parts I wanted to change. A lot of it was probably unnecessary, but it ended-up a lot like what you're suggesting. It did have a MIM extractor, which seems to be pretty-much universally reviled. Mine has Heinie rear/Dawson front sights, SVI lockwork, arched steel MSH, C&S ambi safety, Kart ez-fit barrel/bushing, EGW HD extractor. It's my favorite.

The extractor is MIM?! I hadn't planned on replacing that as I thought Colt extractors were good quality.

Colt only used MIM extractors for a short while and found out it wasn't a good idea, and I don't believe many were used. Easy way to find out is to look at the rearmost part of the extractor, just in back of the slot for the firing pin retainer. If, on the bottom part there is a void rather than that part being fully round, it's a MIM part.

They can be made to look real good.
This one was a Lew Horton run and came from the factory with Bomars and front dovetailed sight. The work done on this one is by Bob Miller.

OK, besides the plastic MSH and trigger, and a possible MIM extractor, anything else I should know about MIM parts, etc that should be replaces?
