Ya' gotta love vintage Colts! This one is a '52 production Commander in .38 Super that will be going back to it's owner shortly. It's customized in the Retro style featuring Yost rear sight, Kart barrel and bushing, serrations to the front strap and MSH, RoundButt MSH and hand made desert ironwood stocks. Here are a few pictures.

MY - TEE - FINE! Don't get any better than this.

My very first carry gun was a 38Super Commander that I bought well used. More like rode hard and put up wet. Served me well for quite a few years. Migrated away from it due to the less than stellar accuracy of the old style barrel (headspace). Still got it and have been meaning to do something with it, but no time to really address it. Seeing this has bumped it up in priority!

I love the thumb safety, but the whole package is so elegant.

I'm sure some think that low thumb safety is strange, but they work GREAT for those with shorter digits! On and off is much easier and reliable and riding my thumb on these while firing is so comfortable and natural. Awesome job John! 8)

Retro Rulez!! I've got a '53 .45 Commander that would look great decked-out just like that one.
(except for the "orthopedic" thumb safety- (not a slam, just not my taste :) )

Stunning pistol.

But I have a noob question. If I were to run across an 50-60s era Colt and wanted to send it in for a makeover, is the metal strong enough to handle hard use? Gun school work?

Regards,
Greyson

John as usual your work is to be admired. And after talking to the proud owner this morning, he is giddy with excitement. Maybe if I'm nice he might even let me touch it. I saw the "before" and the "after" is just amazing. Very nice set up! Congrats to you both!

They're fine, with the usual cautions about the aluminum frames not really being suited to high volume. Also consider this - we all accept that even steel parts will ultimately break, given enough use. When you look at a '50's - '60's vintage pistol, you've got to wonder how much it's been shot before you bought it. If it was shot a bunch (and I know that the odds are it wasn't) customizing it doesn't "roll back the odometer" as far as rounds already fired goes. The frame's life span is still subject to prior use.

Wouldn't steel inserts for feedramp lengthen or extend life of aluminum frame 1911's?

Me too... That just about makes the rest of it. Not that "the rest of it" really needs any help...

Ok, this baby just showed up on the doorstep this morning and pix don't do this justice! 8) Fit and finish are unbelievable and John's work is second to none (and I've owned or own many tops gunsmith toys). He is so easy to work with and never feels like I'm intruding on him if I have a question. I can't recommend John more highly and if ANY of you have old or new base guns, send them in to John and try him out (but only AFTER my Officer's model is finished!).

Yes, I'm talking to you 45Driver and Only a 1911.

The only base gun I am sitting on is a Browning Hi Power....can you talk John into doing a Peerless package on a BHP? Now that would be cool....

Hey, that's up to John. I think he's only working on 1911's.

Beautiful piece. I had Garthwaite build a 12xx SN range .38 Super LW Commander for me last year, great pistol.

What a stunning gun. How did I miss this one? Love your work John. Those stocks absolutely work perfectly with the rest of the pistol.
