Just finished up Larry's 1911 pistolsmith course here in Council Bluffs, IA. After 5 long, hard days we came away with 6 very nice pistols...and a bit of Carpal Tunnel! This cubicle dweller definitely does not spend nearly enough time working with the hands.

I was truly amazed at the amount of information passed to us by Larry based on his impressive amount of experience with the 1911 platform. There is definitely more to the inner workings of the 1911 than meets the eye!

The class was made up of 2 Blackwater contractors, 1 LE Officer, 1 Soldier, 1 Fireman and myself. Most of us were pretty familiar with the platform, but we all had a lot to learn.

To top the whole thing off, Larry completed a couple pistols of his own, first was his 10K gun (it'll take $10,000 to get this out of his hands!) and next up was a copy of the first pistol he was issued in his former unit.

Below are some pics of my creation. I've still got some work to do with final smoothing and such. I also need to replace the thumb safety as I was experiencing some bounce during firing in spite of a very positive engagement with the plunger. This was actually one that Larry had not seen before, so I should have the new Wilson tomorrow.

Larry's 10K Gun (It'll take $10,000 to get this out of Larry's hands) First gun he's built for himself in awhile and the only one he owns outside of the pistol above. This one includes some sweet Pete Single checkering and some internal surprises:

I like what you have done! Don't forget to bevel the hammer!

Thanks! Yeah, I still have to bevel the hammer and work on the carry bevel. Also, the rear of the slide has not yet been blended into the frame. We simply ran out of time.

Also, as noted, I have to replace the thumb safety then run some more rounds through it. I'm really pleased for a first build. Slide to Frame fit came out fantastic and, while the photo sucks, I'm also very pleased with how the front sight came out. I was worried about hand filing and serrating a small piece like that, but the pics do not do it justice.

Looks good Giff, and interesting account, thanks for sharing.

Trying to get Larry to stop by here for a visit next time he's in the 'hood.

Is it a carbon gun or a stainless gun, just wondering on that....

Ned,
Thanks for the compliment. Your name definitely came up a number of times during the course. He had some very good things to say about you. I might have talked him into a MOAKS 2 as well.

As for the gun, it is a carbon caspian frame/slide. Obviously, still in the white. I might do a kitchen stove park job while I finalize the bevel and such. Final finish will most likely be a park job from Texas Armament.
