I have a SA Champion and a Commander I want to have IWB and OWB holsters built for and was wondering if I could get buy with just having one IWB and one OWB built in a Commander length and use my 4 and 4 1/4 in them. Will it damage a Commander length holster to carry a 4 inch gun in it IWB?

Is the dust cover substantially different enough on a 1999 Champion (thicker more square?) from a Colt Commander dust cover that it would not work in a Colt Commander boned holster and thus need its own?

I'd love to have 4 custom holsters built but its not gonna happen in a timely fashion, so its either Kydex or 2 custom (IWB &OWB) rigs. Thanks

I guess it depends on how much more thickness we are talking about, but you could probably stretch the holster sufficiently with the gun and a plastic bag to make it a non issue. I wouldn't worry about the length - if it was a 5" holster you would see the leather colapse, but I don't think it will be an issue with a commander length.

I'm really thinking in old Springfield terms. I have been told they have a thicker and boxier dust cover and that some leather fits and some don't and that Kydex no way. I noticed that many holster makers list Champion as a specific option so I thought I'd check with the experts.

45Fundi, I used to have a comparison pic where you could plainly see the difference. I have an older SA loaded that wouldn't work in a kydex holster or two (Comptac and Cendex as I can recall) because of the blockier dustcover. One could conceivably have a problem with a tightly boned and molded leather holster as well. I believe the current SA's have gone back to the orig specs?

Thanks EricO
Do you know what year SA slimmed their dustcovers?
