Being a “multi-man” shop we often have folks enquire about the build process of each gun and whether or not they are done one at a time by one man or as a group effort. For the overwhelming majority of our builds we do them one-by-one with us each individually concentrating on only one gun at a time... since there are two of us in the shop full time we find it keeps everything simple and easy. But, on a rare and special occasion Ted and I get to collaborate a bit and “split” a gun up so to speak. And this gun was one of those special occasions...
This was a gun done for a good friend and customer of the shop... custom pistols and fine guns in general are quite familiar to this gentleman and for this project in particular he wanted a classically styled Government Model that exuded that “special something”. And what better gun to use for a base than a Colt Commercial, and an AMU Commercial at that.
This was kind of an inside/outside split... I took charge of the inside of the gun after which Ted focused on the outside of the gun. As is our standard, the build started with a weld-up frame and slide fit followed up by fitting a Kart barrel and EGW barrel bushing. A best quality trigger job comes courtesy of a C&S hammer, sear, and disconnect all set to fall with press on the Greider trigger. Best quality internals throughout the gun also include Wilson “Bulletproof” extractor and ejector, EGW firing pin stop, EGW slide stop, a slightly extended and angled-back mag catch, and a bar-stock plunger tube. Once I had flattened and serrated the slide top, cut in the Professional Grade rear sight and Gold Line front, and lowered and flared the ejection port Ted took over with all the fun stuff like hand-checkering the front strap and MSH at 30lpi, complete line straightening, rear slide serrations, and hand-checkering the bottom of the slide stop at 40pli. Ted also fit a Wilson Combat grip safety that pivots on a Colt commercial thumb safety, machined the slide for French borders, beveled the mag-well, and blended a set of his phenomenal hand-made grips to the gun. Once the gun was de-horned and detailed he put on the final touches of nitre blue pins and screws to accent the traditional hand-polished blue finish and the end result is gun I for one would love to put many holster miles on.
