A recent Colt Government Model treated to a makeover...

Image

Like most of what we build this gun started as a bone stock Colt Series 70 Government Model. The Colt base pistol was sent to the shop on the recommendation of a previous customer and the gun is now set to have a twin built to be used as a spare. I’ve always liked the idea of having two of anything that someone plans on really using... two pistols, two holster sets, two rifles, two knives, etc... the idea that you’ve always got a spare you can rely on is comforting... although in my case this can sometimes get a bit excessive  . So it will be even more enjoyable when I get to build the twin to this gun sometime next year.

The owner had purpose in mind when he spec’d out the gun, a solid fighting gun with which to apply the fundamentals. A weld-up frame and slide fit started things off followed by a Kart barrel mated up to an EGW bushing, these two main modifications continue to prove themselves as a solid foundation for a full-house gun. The front strap was high-cut and hand-checkered at 30lpi with the mainspring housing checkered to match and then modified for a lanyard loop. Internal components come in the form of a Wilson extractor and ejector, EGW firing pin stop and slide stop, and tool steel action components set off by a short trigger. An S&A grip safety swings on a Wilson ambi-safety, the port was lowered and flared, and the slide was fit with PG sights with three dot tritium inserts. Round out the pistol with thorough de-horn and a traditional blue finish set off by tan VZ Operator stock panels and all that’s left to do is build it a twin... enjoy the pictures.

That is a nice example of a using pistol, extremely nice and well thought out.
