I picked this up recently from a dealer in Texas. They knew nothing about the gun with regards to builder(s), and sold it for substantially less than a Springfield loaded model. I have a love for 80s and 90s comp guns, and this one makes me quite happy. It reminds me of my first comp gun that I purchased in 1987. That one was a collaboration between a Phoenix gunsmith and at that time, an aspiring gunsmith/master machinist a bit north of Phoenix.

I have a feeling this gun is built by those same two. The frame exhibits the Phoenix smith's fitting of the beavertail, which was as nice as one could find in the 80s. It also looks to be his checkering. The top half is most certainly the work of his partner in crime. The compensator is fit perfectly, the bushing and barrel fit just like that first comp gun I had. The flat top and serrations of the slide, and perfectly machined Bo-Mar cut are hallmarks of that gentlman who did my first comp.

So, any of you here recognize the work? If I'm right about the builder of the comp, someone here will definitely recognize it. Any insight would be much appreciated. I'm not much of a photographer, but I hope this gun brings back fond memories for you 40 and older folks.

I love vintage comp guns too. My dad had this one built by the Springfield custom shop in the early eightys. The craftsmanship is not quite the same as on yours. Still a neat pistol though.

Those '80's comp guns shot great. The ones that were well-crafted are mostly STILL great guns.

Single-stack mags are MUCH easier to carry than double-stack mags, and the slide-ride red-dots aren't "quite" carry-friendly yet.

So these are the closest to an Open Class gun that I'm happy carrying. A single-stack comp gun with iron sights is as easy to carry as any other full sized steel gun. To really bring it up to modern specs, one could probably install a "high-grip" beavertail, but it might not make any measurable difference (on the clock).

Definitely love the comp guns that are built up to the slide...reminds me of a longer version of Morris Custom Carry Comps.
