I can't speak for the others but at YoBo we use alot of Kart barrels. They are oustanding in quality, consistent, and available. I just used a Nowlin for the first time and was pleaseantly surprised.

However, just inspected a Schuemann for the first time in detail and was very impressed. The finish is second to none, and the machining is first class. If expense was not an issue....I would use a Schuemann, however, a Kart, Nowlin, etc...won't be an less of a user's barrel.

Any of the 'name barrels' will offer outstanding accuracy - if they are properly fit.

I personally use mostly Bar-Sto's and Kart's, but have heard some pretty good things about Shuemann's too.

This thread is both interesting and timely. I've got a gun that will be going to Don W. for a new barrel before too long. I was going to have him use an Ed Brown for it's corrosion resistance, but perhaps I should consider using a Kart.

How do you keep them from rusting? I live in Colorado, so it's fairly dry here. I usually wipe 'em down with FP-10 once in a while, and of course I run an FP-10 patch followed by a dry one. I guess I'm just nervous about that barrel rusting when it's being stored.

As a fellow Coloradan, I would say not to worry about your barrel rusting.

T'ain't gonna happen.

Thanks Tim. I live out east, toward your old stompin' grounds... boy is it dry! Maybe I'll go ahead with the Kart instead.

as far as the barrel rusting. this might start agiant snowball effect.

if your worried about it that much. use breakfree. if you personally believe the bore will get hurt. only put it on the outside.

i use tetra on the inside of my bores usually and have had no porblems whatsoever....

Hey all....
All I can say is here in Iowa we have hot humid summers and cold dry winters. I have shot many matches year round and never had a problem with chrome moly barrel rusting on any of my 1911's. Just clean it up when your done.....it's that simple :)

C.Rod,

Personally, I like Fred Kart's barrels, especially for .45s. They seem to be VERY well finished in the bore and I like where Kart keeps the extra material on his barrels to allow for a hard fit.

I have Bar-Sto barrels on all my 10mms as of right now, and am completely satisfied with them. They all shoot extremely well and are consistent with a wide variety of ammo, but I have some plans for a Kart Barreled 6" longslide 10mm and a KKM bull-barreled 5" 10mm.

I had a Colt Combat Commander .45ACP with a KKM barrel and it shot very well. However. most of my experience with KKM barrels is in match grade Berettas, and in those I have seen quite a few guns shoot sub 0.75" groups at 50yards from a rest.

Like most everyone else, I think most of the aftermarket match barrels being made today are of high quality and will shoot better than most of us can hold if they are properly fitted.

As for rust... that's more an issue of proper maintainence than material. With the time it takes to get a custom gun built and the expense of the parts and labor, I have never quite been able to understand why anyone wouldn't put forth the effort to wipe their guns down on a regular basis. I believe, at least from my experience, that the worst enemy of a gun isn't the weather as much as the acids & salts from the hands of anyone handling it.

Happy Shooting, and good luck with making your barrel choice.
