For some it means one thing and for others something totally different but either way the gun pictured here seems the perfect blend of what anyone could ask for in a long-term 1911.

Image

Classic beauty, tradition, durability, and usability are all apt ways to describe this pistol but the gun is also a fitting example of rarity perfected. It’s not often that we come across one of these base guns, an AMU Colt Commercial, and it’s even more rare that we get to do a conversion on one... but this one got the full Ted Yost Signature Grade treatment.

From the flattened and serrated slide top and hand-cut 30lpi checkering, to the perfectly straightened frame and slide lines and classic Yost round-butt conversion it sometimes seems to me that these AMU Commercials were destined from birth to be customs. And as one would expect this gun got all the parts, pieces, and details you’d expect from a Yost Signature Grade... Kart barrel, Wilson beavertail, Ed Brown thumb safety and slide stop, hand-beveled mag-well, serrated rear of the slide, polished blue finish with nitre accents, all best quality internals, gold line front sight, and of course hand made English Walnut stocks.

Pictured with a few tools of our trade, it’s hard to argue that this gun, classily styled and built to last, wouldn’t stand out and excel in any role... even if it does have that so called archaic and “fragile” finish of yesteryear. Enjoy...

Jason, are you sure your initials aren't "J-M-B"?

A definite classic beauty sir.

Couldn't agree more. I have tried to make the case a number of times recently that these signature grade guns, although pretty, are meant to run.

Love the woodwork on Ted's tools btw.

Wow, that's perfect Jason. And no hole visible below the thumb safety :)

Ah, one for those of us who like angled slide serrations! I wondered what a classic-styled custom would look like with those.
I like it!

And I still like the look of polished bluing best!

That just brings a tear to my eyes. What I really love are the perfectly blued, and regulated grip screws. Nice touch.

NOT FAIR. I know it is the holiday season and we should be thinking about giving to others BUT.... I would look good with that. Nice pistol.

Wow! That is a great looking piece. And I don't mean piece as in the street vernacular for gun, but rather piece as in 'piece of art'.

Posted at 5am. Either a late night or an early morning at the ol Heirloom Precision shop?

Usually I look at the custom guns and think "wow, that's nice, but if I had ordered it I would have done XXXX"
Not so with this one, this is exactly what I'd get if I had the money. From the top slide serrations, french border, high cut front strap, solid trigger, no ball cuts and gold front sight. Just perfect.
Cool, even the plunger detent is that neat polished blue...very cool.

Simply beautiful work Jason... You are an extremely talented artist and your work is second to none! Congrats on yet another masterpiece, and its lucky owner.

Not to take anything away from Jason's work as it is simply extraordinary, but I believe this 1911 came from Ted's bench. The flawlessly executed round butt, nitre blue pins and screws, scalloped and serrated slide stop, the hand made tool handles, and the fact that Jason said in the initial post that "...this one got the full Ted Yost Signature Grade treatment".

Nonetheless, an extraordinary example of the finest in custom 1911s.

Hey Fellas,

I'm the lucky owner of this master piece! Ted's work is just amazing! Also, I can't say enough about how pleasant it is to work with Ted and Jason.

Barry, you and I are on the same page on serrations. I picked up this '68 Colt a couple of years ago because of the angled serrations.

Great photo job Jason!

Hope to get the range next week.

Mr. Ford,
You are indeed fortunate to own this piece. I have come back to this topic, I suppose, 15 or 16 times admiring the work and seeing who might fess up to "indulging themselves". Enjoy it in good health, sir.

Dave

Enjoy it Steve! It was everything I could do to keep Jason from trying to talk you out of your base gun.

He's got a twin to it, and wanted a pair

He's just not worthy :P
