Anyone have any experience with STI guns and the Trojan in particular. I am looking for a 5 inch 9MM 1911 for use in ESP and that seems to be the gun of choice.

I have read a number of posts on the 1911 forum and the posters there seem to think highly of them but I would to get opinions from the pros.

Thanks.

Hello. I have 3 STI Trojan's. Two are 5" guns, one being in .38 Super and the other in .45 ACP. My 9mm is the long slide 6" version. All have proven accurate and reliable in the extreme, but the Super is picky about LOA when using other than ball. The other two have digested everything I've fed them.
I guess the only malfunctions have been with loads that were too light in a couple of instances. The 9mm frequently doesn't lock the slide back after the last shot with standard pressure ammunition, but works fine with warmer handloads or +P.

Best.

Shootin ESP is quite a feat I have played with a number of 9mm STI's. If you have the money they are a great gun the only problems that I have ever had with a 9mm 1911 is magazines. Seems like you get about 1 good one for every 3 or 4 bad ones??? I used metalforms and they were the only ones that worked with consistency. If I were going to shoot Idpa again in Esp I would opt for either a .38 super for mag and feeding reliability or an sti widebody in forty smith. the reasoning is this and this is just my .02 cents on competing IDPA (and I had a master ssp, and expert cdp, esp)not bragging just shot a few matches!!1. with a .38 super I have had about half of the magazine feeding probs wilson makes a good .38 super mag and I think it has to do with the longer cartridges the .38 sup is closer in length to a .45. And you can down load a .38 to the same as a .9mm luger. Now on the .40 you can compete with a widebod gun downloaded to ten rds. you get smokin fast reloads with the widebody and sti mags are getting more reasonable and more common. Also you can cross over to limited IPSC or limited ten IPSC with the same gun. so in closing if I were going to buy the sti trojan it would be a .38super,,if I just wanted asti to compete with go with an edge or eagle. Sorry if this was too long winded!!

For single stack 9mm mags, the only ones that have worked for me reliably have been the "Springfield" Metalform mags.

If you are having any feeding issues in a 9mm single stack try some, they will help.

Let us know what you decide hope my long winded post was of some help. Competition shooting is probably where I learned 90% of the pistol knowledge that I have. It is a great place to see the advantages and disadvantages of all kinds different gun holster ammo sight and internal gun components and modifications. Esp to me is the hardest class to compete in as it is a class where you will see everything from stock glocks to trick odd caliber 1911's and from experience a guy with a reliable 9mm 1911 is head and shoulders above the rest gun wise.
Regards and good luck.
