I have always admired a serrated top of the slide, with or without it being flat-topped.

Does a flat top thin out the metal near the locking lug cuts on a 1911 slide enough to be concerned about the strength of the slide ? What seem sto be the minumum thickness needed ? How many slides get rejected for this modification because of variations in the thickness ?

Just curious. :)

Like any good thing, it can be overdone and ruin a slide. Most slides will have .090" to .100" of wall thickness above the locking lug slots. If you mill off .035" or so, you're fine and will have a flat surface measuring .375" to .400" wide. More slides get rejected for flanged and otherwise damaged lug corners than anything else. BTW, all of these dimensions are coming from memory without finishing my first cup of coffee.
