Which of the custom smiths are one man shops where you know your work was done by that smith?

Alex Hamilton of Ten Ring Precision, although, I do believe that he now has an understudy working with him on occassion. All work that Alex has done for me has been excellent

You could put a mirror over your bench so you could talk to someone. :)

Ned is not kidding one bit. I have been at his place a couple times and I have a bathroom bigger then his shop.

When Ned works on a rifle or shotgun he has to take it apart because it won't fit into his shop in one piece

Yeah, it's one of those big ones though, like you find in England.

So it's a TARDIS? :)

(Since, well -- all the red ones are gone, or were gone when I left 10 years ago...)

You know Ned, if you're bored and lonely in that phone booth I have a Combat Commander that would love to come keep you company! :D

BTW, Just checked out the photo section of your sight and that 9mm in photo #15 (I think) with the white (Ivory?) grips is absolutely Stunning!!

Can you imagine if all of the smiths pets got together? The info they could come up with. Between Tim's dog, Chuck's cat, and the Williams' canine crowd. We need a Pet Detective to work on this one.

Hey, Tim in our shop had a pet snake......until it bit his finger off.

Blackstone, TARDIS went right over my head. That wasn' the phone-box-turned-spaceship on that old Limey TV show, was it? 'Cause that's exaclty what I have.

Tommy, loneliness is not a prob here, as my shop also has a cat (and a few mice, hmm, lazy cat!) Glad you like that ivory-gripped Commander (9X23), thanks.

Yeah -- that's what I get for letting my inner sci-fi geek out AND combining it with being an ex-pat. :)

Absolutely right, though. Phone booth turned spaceship.

Blimey, I can't believe I got that right! I loved that show, the few times I happened to see it. In fact I don't recall the Brit show I didn't like. Well, The Avengers is kinda hard to watch, more than 3-4 episodes at a time....

Expat, eh? Bloody good that I capitalized Limey, eh? :D I have a Triumph TR7 and a BSA 441 Victor. Lotsa interesting vehicular metal comes from your old place.

Ned,

I can't believe it you have a 441!! I have one too and man is it one quick little bike. One of these days I got to put it back together. I took it all down to the frame about 6 years ago (it was going to be a winter project) and with everything going on I just haven't rebuilt it yet.

By Gosh now I have something to do thanks for bring that up.

I'm quiet and mostly harmless -- just like I'm sure everyong else on here is.

And as to metal -- yes. Just don't expect the electricals to work, right? :)

(Besides -- I'm somewhat addicted to the metal that is available here and NOT over there...)

Actually, the Prince of Darkness has struck the TR only rarely, and the BSA, never.

Here is my take on the one man shop. If Ted, Ned, John, Chuck, etc.., have other people doing work them, since their name is on or associated with the product, I would expect those other people would have to very good at their job. Word of mouth kills business and shody work don't go without commentary. All you have to do is go to numerous firearms forums to see the commentary. Of course, lots of the commentary I see appears to be from people with questionable expectations. As long as people are imperfect, even the best Pistolsmith can have one get by him. What matters is how that shop handles any problems!

Looks like I'm way not alone in in owning British rolling stock. What's a IIA?

Back on subject, at least a dozen times a year a friend will ask me why I don't hire somebody to get more work out...... just get somebody in here to do the "easy stuff". Now, there is plenty of easy stuff, that's true, but the thing is, easy or hard, it has to be perfect. OK, that's BS, it has to be as perfect as possible. I make mistakes and not everything is as perfect as I would like it to be. I just like being the one making them so I know where they are. And I am constantly refining and evolving the way I do things; it's hard enough to keep track of the process changes without trying to pass them on and make sure they're being done right by somebody else. Never mind the huge complications that come with having an employee. Me being a one man shop basically comes down to keeping it simple, I can go to work feeling like an artist and not an employer.

I'm not even trying to stay on topic, with the possible exception of jealousy. Not that I have anywhere to park a Landy, but MAN I want one. :)

(And I'm jealous of all you people wtih custom handguns as well as British vehicles. :) )

Hey Ned,

Is that BSA 441 Victor the old single piston thumper with the compression release where if you don't time the release when you kick it over it will launch you off the bike or break your leg...(don't ask me how I know about unauthorized launches  )...

i know it would vary, depending on full custom, just some add ons ect. just curious...
