I went to the local range today. I took a much customized Colt Gold Cup.
Just so this will make sense it is a Bullseye Hardball gun by a top smith and will shoot sub 3 inch 50 yard groups. It still has the stock sites.
For the fun of it I also took a box stock H&K Tactical. I started off shooting the H&K since I had not shot it in a year. After about 20 rounds I put up a new target. (15 yards, free hand with a 2 hand hold). I shoot the typical sight picture low at 6PM. I ran 2, 5 shot groups and pulled the target, one hole center bullseye about the size of a half dollar. I pulled the Colt out ran about 20 rounds to get up to speed. Put a new target same circumstances. I had a couple in the bull, 9s and one in the 8.
I put up a 3rd target, I really bared down pretty much the same. I then shot about 50 9mm. I was ready to leave and a guy approached and asked a couple questions about the 45 ACP we talked about 10 minutes and he said he was think about buying a 1,000 Kimber. I told him, he should think about the H&K Tactical. He said he really wanted a Kimber. I said look what a box stock H&K would do. I put up a new target ran 2 groups of 5 for a total of 10 shots same thing one hole center bull (picking the gun up cold and from the case) As I came home my only thought was why do I shoot the H&K better than my custom match guns? The only thing I can think of is the front sight on the H&K is wider and when I put it at the 6 pm sight position the front sight takes up more space and I'm not moving as much. What do you think do you shoot better with a thicker front sight?

I suppose it all depends on what your definition of better is? I you are heading off to Camp Perry than yes it is better to have a thicker front sight. If you headed off to Pasa park than you might want to trade some of the accuracy for speed. Personally I like a thinner front sight.
