Well I am in the market for a set of grips for a 1911. I want wood, preferably Coco Bolo that isn't so orange, more brown. The grips need to be cut for an ambi safety and I prefer a flat bottom w/MSH pin exposed. It seems that a lot of knowledgeble people come here, so I thought I would throw it out there and see if you could offer a suggestion of where I might get something along these lines. Don Williams grip page is down right now so that eliminates him. Thanks...

There is also Ahrend's grips. I have had a few sets from them that were really nice.

Unfortunately, Ahrends seems to not be making grips for anyone but S&W anymore (just speculation on my part tho'), and that's one of the problems we're having. They had such a large variety of stuff that it's hard to find a replacement.

I had also heard that Ahrend's were getting hard to get a hold of.
The last set of Ahrend's grips I ordered was awhile ago so that definitely could be the case.
I may have just called at the right time also as they were getting ready to do a batch of 1911 stocks. I asked if they would throw in an extra pair for me and they agreed. They turned out really nice, so it may be worth a call to see what they say.

I spoke to a friend who will remain nameless in the grip business and the cost of wood. I mean good wood has increased quite a bit. There is a lot of standard and nice but the real defined grains, with the sharp colors are just not as available but the what he found surprising was the buyers were not buying.

There as a marked increase in interest in the micarta's and laminates that were in the moderate to high price point.

The fine woods such as used in knife handles, and pistol grips were selling but at as slower pace.

Kind of like the buyers were going to settle for "almost good as" and not what they wanted.

Again. Just a bit of perspective.

Take a look at http://www.imageseek.com/hakan/. He is great to deal with and his stippling is awesome. (If you want pictures of the stippling close-up PM me; I have a few pairs.)
You could also contact http://www.wickedgrips.com They will make whatever you want.
You can buy the wood that you like and send it to them. (I sent Hakan desert ironwood from http://www.arizonaironwood.com/page1.html )

The current Les Baer cocobolo grips sound like they are what you're looking for. I can't speak for the color but the other features sound spot on.
