As an occasional IDPA competitor, I’ve wanted to try the Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) class for a while. So I decided to build myself a 9MM 1911 with all the features I felt I would want for this class. Below are the results. I recently used it in the IDPA nationals in Allentown, PA (the gun functioned flawlessly, but the shooter had a few malfunctions!). The first photo is by Point Seven Studios; the other photos are mine (you can obviously tell the difference!).

Caspian Government steel frame and slide
Custom 25 LPI rear slide serrations
Schuemann AET 9mm ramped barrel
EGW thick flange barrel bushing (hand beveled)
Hand checkered 30 LPI front strap
Hand checkered 40 LPI below trigger guard
Ed Brown hammer
Titanium hammer strut and mainspring cap
Greider match trigger
Flush cut Wilson slide stop
STI ambi thumb safety
S&A beavertail
Ed Brown 30 LPI mainspring housing
French cuts on slide
Champion Tactical Competition rear sight
Dawson fiber optic front sight
Morris Custom magwell (silver soldered in placed)
Entire pistol dehorned
VZ Operator black micarta grips
GunKote matte black finish

That 1911 looks like a fun pistol to shoot! Very nice work. What type of 9mm round (manufacture and weight) do you prefer to run through it?

Richard, we met briefly at IDPA Nationals in September. So that is the gun you shot at Nationals. I am disappointed that I didn't get the chance to lay my hands on it for a close inspection. It is very nicely done and really similar in a lot of ways to my ESP gun.

Richard,
It is a pleasure to see some of your work!
I really, really like that gun.
It's far too infrequent when we get the time to build one for ourselves.
:D
Please post more. Pull up a chair here and relax.
:)

Thanks for all the compliments!

Chuck R. - I really, really like shooting it!
:D
Pete R. - I assume you were the gentlemen that came up to me at the Nationals and introduced yourself - it was a pleasure to meet you too (and a surprise to me that you knew me (I guess it was the hat!)).

Ruggedtrail - I've been trying different ammo in it; it seems to prefer the 115 gr weights for best accuracy.

The only magazines I've used are the 9-round Metalform 9mm mags (used by Springfield). They've worked perfectly.

That would be me. You were watching my squad shoot and I saw your name tag. I tend to remember the names of gunsmith's who's work appeals to me.

I like everything about that gun, to include the caliber.

Excellent execution.

What is the difference between the Heinie magwell and the Morris magwell? They look very similar in the parts pics, and as finished magwells.

The Heinie magwell is attached with screws into the frame. The Morris magwell is silver soldered or welded in place.
