Okay guys,

The revolver threads have been few and far between lately. Let's see some pics of your slicked up J-frames. While you may have seen most of these, I'll get it started off.

alright - here goes... first post. I hear you guys are the 'elite " of the critics...

I'm ashamed to say the only thing custom on my J-frames is the wood...

But i put a lot of work into these grips - the darker big-leaf Maple Burl was my first set - not a perfect fit, and not the easiest wood to work with. Tons of mistakes, but ultimately i ended up with a super comfortable set of grips that i REALLY LOVE the feel and look of, mistakes and all.

The brass screw, and both inserts were home-made on my little lathe as well. First try. Looking for better ideas.

The second set of grips is Curly Narra Snakewood. I consider these to be a perfect fit, great shape, and highly curly. I've yet to make the grip screw and inserts yet as i cant decide on the metal i want to use.

I apologize for the poor pictures.

You're doing a great job making grips!! Just a botanical note..... Narra and Snakewood are two very different and unrelated woods. Narra, Pterocarpus indicus, has a specific gravity of approximately @ .52 and comes from the far east while Snakewood, Piratinera guianensis, comes from Suriname and has a specific gravity of .82 - 1.3. The black figure in Snakewood is also somewhat light sensitive and will disappear in time if exposed to light. Narra is also known as Amboyna. Narra's specific gravity of .52 is similar to that of Black Walnut while 1.0 of Snakewood is quite hard similar to Ebony. That specific gravity makes drying and working with Snakewood very difficult as it is prone to checking. Anyway, just a FYI on wood.

My all the time, every day, everywhere gun next to its favorite mode of transport...

The gun sports a set of Spegel stocks now and even after almost 7 years of daily use that ankle rig still looks almost new.

Jason,

For serious carry, you have a set of CTC LG405 Laser Grips on it. I'm glad you finally came out of the closet!

Regards,

Rob

Matt, that's a good looking wheel gun. Here is a pic of the rig Matt did for my article on the new Centennial.

In response to Rob G.: I made those grips myself. My current method is horribly time consuming but i think the results are worth it for me at least.

I must say both the guns and knowledge here really humble me.

Those are good looking stocks.

Jason, that's for going public with your j-frame. Hope all is well with you and Ted.

My Performance center 640-1 and Matt's leather. This is the perfect combination and for some reason, I can't seem to carry anything else these days, it's that good!

J R,

I've been out of the loop for a few days. Thanks for answering the questions and linking the old stuff here.

Regards,

Rob

Not a custom, but I have really fallen in love with this one....thanks for the review Rob, it made the decision easy, and I don't regret it a bit. The walnut grips on this one are just spectacular in person - the pics don't do them justice.

The ankle holster is one of Lou's, and it is easy to see (after wearing it daily) why he IS the man when it comes to concealed carry.

Now out to the shop to get started on my pocket holster

The j-frame makes a great belly gun, I also use it when I'm out hiking in Alaska, not big enough for all critters but it gives me comfort to have it on.

All nice stuff. Mushinto, who made your grips on your Model 60? I like them. What is the material?
Thanks in advance.
Best,
Jeffro

Grips are Eagle Ivory Polymer Secret Service grips. Although they have been offered since 2001 as a "limited edition, they are still shown on their web site.

I've got some grips like that on one of my guns, they feel great in the hand and they hold up well. 8)

John,

You are right about Lou's ankle rigs. I also see that you are using Speer Gold Dot ammo. The loads for the short barrel work very well. You may want to add a black T-grip.

I'm glad to see that there are a few folks on LTW that don't mind admitting they like and carry a J-frame.

Regards,

Rob

Hi, I'm Eric and I carry a J-frame everyday. The two holsters I use routinely are both made by Uncle Lou. For daily BUG carry I use his ankle rig and for other times that the J-Frame might be my only pistol I use one of Lous APX's. The J Frame I carry mostly is a 10 year old 642 with Department issued Federal ammo. I qualify with it on the same course as our regular duty pistols and while I might drop a point or two I have actually shot a 100 with it on several occasions. While a lot of people like the baby Glocks as BUG's I am not one of them.
