No doubt the “retro” thing has really taken hold at the shop lately and the gun pictured here is the first, and likely most labor intensive, of a trio of retro guns to be coming out of the shop over the next few weeks. But this gun was more than your typical retro styled conversion... this body of work was as much restoration as it was customization.

Image

Typical of many of the pistols from this era the base gun was rough , no very rough, with layers and layers of pits, dents, dings, and craters that would make a lunar surface look smooth. Some of the dents and dings were cavernous and caused both Ted and I to take a second and third look at the gun each time wondering if there was to be any salvation for the piece. But we’re also always up for a challenge so one day Ted decided there was no more wondering and decreed it was time for a retro custom-restoration... to which I replied, “great, I’ll dig out the Bondo”.

Not long after a new day was beginning to brighten for this Pony. And the next thing I knew the slide had returned from our good friend and engraver extraordinaire, JR French, who meticulously re-engraved all the roll-marks. Soon after 'ol Theo was putting the finishing touches on his project... to include nitre blue right down to the lanyard loop. Custom-restorations may not always be what were known for but in a case like this, well, we’re always up for the challenge. Enjoy...

Excellent work. I think you guys know I have a fondness for the older colt roll marks as you have built a pair for me in the past as well as I still have one in the works.

Again, a classic reborn.

Very nice job!

My preference on the pre-war guns is top leave the rounds polished as they were in the day.

The Yost sights looks great on a job lke this. Hmmmmm

PS-if you need any original pre-war parts let me know.

Oh, wow! Those are the only words that come out. You did that pistol very proud, sir!

By the way, is that an early Bat-Compass? (See first pic for the Batman logo in the compass lid.)

Wow... I've got a rough 1918 mfg'd 1911 that I've been looking at restoring. I've got a couple of other primo military and commercial 1911's but this one is just an old war horse I basically stole from a guy who "needed the money." It has little rust but was obviously a grunt's gun as you can see on the top of the slide as well as the M.S. housing where it was used as a hammer. The original finish is still present though probably in less than 50% condition. Probably a little better condition than this one started but not much. I've considered it seriously on this one but keep coming back to: "Man, if this gun could tell its story..." And that has, thus far, prevented me from going to town on it... My only question is: How are you filling the pits/dings? As one that's never been afraid to strike a TIG arc on ANYTHING that was my plan of action.

That's just a gorgeous resto 1911... :)

Absolute Excellence! THAT is what old Colts should look like.

Beautiful work, gents.

My sentiments exactly! I really appreciate the nostalgia created by the overall image, as well.

That gun needs a good shoulder rig, white linen suit, a good cigar, in a Havana bar in the 1930s.
Nice.
