Here are some pics of a Colt that I've recently finished. It's one of the WW-I era marked Government Models that Colt is producing. This one had a ding in the center of the front strap, making it a perfect candidate for a custom. This pistol was furnished with two sets of grips, a set of bark Ivory panels for "dressing up" and I made a set of Claro Walnut stocks for everyday wear. The pistol was equipped as follows:

Yost retro rear and SDM dovetail front sight with 14k Gold bead and the dovetail radiused to the slide
Lowered ejection port
Kart Match barrel and bushing
EGW long nose spring plug with the nose hand checkered 30 lpi
Normal function reliability work with Wilson Bulletproof extractor and EGW firing pin stop
Short Greider trigger, SVI sear, factory hammer with shortened and radiused spur
A Colt A1 grip safety with it's longer tang
The front strap and main spring housing were serrated 20 lpi in the square interupted cut pattern
A King's grip safety was shortened and re-radiused
All corners and edges were Carry Beveled
Mag well machine beveled and hand finished
Flats polished to 1200 grit, rounds matted with aluminum oxide and finished by Doug Turnbull Restorations in Charcoal Blue
All pins & screws finished by Turnbull in Nitre Blue

Lord that's a beautiful work of ART! You guys just continue to turn out wonderful examples of the 1911. You have to figure that JMB is seeing all this and smiling, especially at THIS one.

Thanks for the pics, I enjoyed them as I always do.

Any chance of getting a few more pics shoing it flat on its side so we can get a better look?

Nala

John,

I love that gun. Simpler is better, and you did simple a lot of justice there. I used to have one looking a whole helluva lot like that, and I really hate that it had to go. If I weren't dirt poor, it'd be on my hip now.

Great job, and thanks for sharing.

By the way... both sets of grips are fitting, and that's hard to say for wood when the other is Ivory.

What are the guts like in one of these REPRO guns are they series 70, 80 or true internally to the era of 1911 they represent?

Oh, beyond sexy gun

As delivered from Colt, they are supplied with the same internal parts as other current production Colts but do not have Series 80 firing pin safeties.

Wow, John... based on our visit today and these photos you're right on, my brother. This is the treatment I've just got to have for my '52 Commercial Gov't model. Freaking fantastic!

It was great spending time with you today. I can only hope to be spending more time at sweet home Kennesaw, GA, USA in the near future. Keep the faith... we'll get there.

David

Mr. Ross:

You're a lucky man to have seen this gun in person. I think John must have known that I love these type of retro pistols and that's why he hid it from me when I was at his shop that same afternoon you saw it. I must have just missed you. The owner of this gun is going to be very pleased.

When I see the work by the craftsmen who frequent this forum it is something to really enjoy. After looking at some of the figures such as 60,000 produced by Kimber, 15,000 Colts, or 7,100 Springfield (2006 BATF figures) then seeing the work of a one man shop I definitely appreciate the skill shown by the guns on Louder than Words.

I have been very fortunate and use several of these Colt Repro's in the past and in the future for project pieces with the craftsman who frequent this forum. The roll marks just add a bit of unique personality over some other projects I have contracted. I got really lucky and have two sets of consecutive serial number guns in line. :D

But that is years off.

Again, one fine piece of craftsmanship. Something to be proud of and hand down to the next generation.

I wanted to make a quick post to thank John for his work on this pistol. John is a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with. I cant recommend anyone with higher regard. It truly is a work of ART and I love it. The front dovetail is absolutely stunning . Both sets of grips he made are very well done. The overall attention to detail is perfect. The pistol really has two different looks depending on which grips are on it. The site picture is awesome with the gold bead and Yost setup. His polish work on the flats was just right and with Doug Turnbulls finish it really looks great polished. I am thinking of what my next project will be and I look forward to working with him again in the future. I feel very fortunate to own this pistol and will treasure it for a lifetime. :D

As good as John's pics are they really don't do this pistol justice. The finish work is outstanding in person.

I think he must have had a phone"visit" because the pistol at that time was in my safe in Pa.

Smooth One misunderstood what DHRoss was saying. This pistol had been returned to the owner by the time of that visit. Mr. Ross is plotting and scheming about a similar build on his birth-year Colt Commercial coming up in the near future.

Beauty pistol John. Deceptively stock looking pistol, but there's a lot of very fine work there.
