Hello, I am a newbie to the forum. I appreciate the worthy endeavor those involved with LTW have undertaken. I wanted to let you know about a worthy cause that you as a collective might consider donating funds to in the future. The cause is Juvenile Diabetes. My son, now 5 was diagnosed with these disease when he was 3. The cause is unknown but most believe it relates to numerous viruses that attack the pancrease and in turn shut it down. This causes a lack of ability to produce insulin naturally and can lead to coma, brain damage or death if left unchecked.
Though called Juvenile Diabetes, (this due to when the onset occurrs) this is a life long disease. However, much promise is held in future research, and some believe there will be a cure in the next ten years. My son receives three injections of insulin a day, he has his finger poked for testing at least 4 to 8 times a day. He is a champ, doesn't complain or even cry about the injections. He is on a very strict eating schedule, and has to have his blood checked by myself or my wife in the middle of the night to ensure he is not going low. I bring this to the attention of the members of LTW, only because I appreciate greatly the positive tone of the forum and the positive idea behind it. I ask only that you consider giving of extra money to support JDRF research. JDRF is Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation international. This is a leading non-profit contributor to Juvenile Diabetes research founded by parents of Type 1 diabetic children. My son is lucky that he can still run and play and talk, but the long term prognosis is very scary to a father. To help researchers with money to find a cure is now very important to me and my wife. Thank you for reading this and I hope you find a chance to contribute in any way to help find a cure. Thanks CID699

cid699,

First, welcome to LTW! We're glad to have you and hope you enjoy the time spent here. I'm sorry to hear about your son. It's hard to put myself in your shoes as I've never had to face a serious illness with either of my children. You and your wife must be very strong people to do all the things that it takes to care for a child with a serious illness. Please accept my best wishes to your family that your son's condition improves.

CID,
Thanks for the information and I certainly hope for the best in regards to your son. If there is a way to contribute, everyone here at LTW would jump in a minute. We run into some snags sometimes because not all charities want to take money from a firearm entity. Politics. We don't like it, but it happens. However, if we can work something out in the future I can certainly bring it up during the next meeting and see what we can come up with. Again, the best of wishes and future prognosis for your son.
Steve

cid600, welcome to this little piece of the internet that we try to keep mowed and sprayed for bugs.

That sounds like a totally excellent cause and I know that if it can be done, Bailey and crew will find a way. They do all the real work-- I'm just one of the guys with a hammer and file who applies them to a gun until it doesn't look like it did before.

You have a special boy there, a trooper. Sorry to hear of the malady but it's encouraging to hear of such steadfastness in a five-year-old. Good job.

Welcome, cid699. As Ned pointed out, if there's a way, the 'Bailey Mon' and his crew will find it.

FWIW, if you haven't already, I'd recommend giving the 'Freestyle' system a try. http://www.therasense.com/index.aspx

Those damn finger sticks - especially 6 to 8 daily just plain suck. The Freestyle will let you test the little guy using his forearm etc, and the FS needles are about the smallest out there. Virtually painless.

Just a hope that this might help a bit.......

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I did not even think about a possible issue with an organization not willing to accept money from those who deal with guns. That is amazing to me but I guess it takes all types to make the world go around. Anyway, I just wanted to give the collective another option on a worthy organization. CT, thanks for the idea, those testers (according to our Dr.) are not as realiable as the finger poke type so we are sticking (no pun intended) with the one we have. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. cid699
